"TERRORIST TAG" FOR PUNJAB POLICE DEMANDED AFTER TURBAN INCIDENT

A Sikh advocacy group has urged the US and Canada to declare Punjab Police a 'terrorist organization' after its treatment of protesting pharmacists in Mohali Monday.

In a statement here, Sikh for Justice said when pharmacists from Punjab were exercising their fundamental right in Mohali by staging a peaceful sit-in to highlight their demands a Sikh man's turban was forcibly removed by a police officer on the orders of another senior officer of Punjab Police.

"The incident proves that the (Shiromani Akali Dal) SAD (Badal) have not only failed to protect the dignity of Sikh articles of faith but they are also engaged in intentional desecration of the Sikh turban,'' the statement said. It alleged that Punjab Police "on the orders of Badal Government first cane-charged the gathering in which women were beaten mercilessly by Punjab Police.

Not satisfied after beating the women, senior officers of Punjab Police then ordered the police to forcibly remove turbans of Sikhs who were present in the gathering. "Footage with audio and video clearly showing a Sikh police officer order another police officer to forcibly remove a Sikh's turban has emerged.''

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor for the SJF forcibly, said forcibly removing the turban of a Sikh is "the worst form of religious persecution and violation of Sikh human rights, especially when it takes place in Punjab, the homeland of Sikhs under the government headed by a Sikh.''

The Sikh body said it will "approach the governments of the United States, Canada and European Union to declare Punjab Police as a 'terrorist organization' for the recent incidents of torture in custody, extra judicial killings and blatant desecration of Sikh articles of faith in Mohali.'' It said it was also considering legal action on the matter.

The turban or "pagri" often shortened to "pag" or "dastar" are different words in various dialect for the same article. All these words refer to the garment worn by both men and women to cover their heads. It is a headdress consisting of a long scarf-like single piece of cloth wound round the head or sometimes an inner "hat" or patka. Traditionally in India, the turban was only worn by men of high status in society; men of low status or of lower castes were not allowed or could not afford to wear a turban.
Although the keeping of unshorn hair was mandated by Guru Gobind Singh as one of the Five K's or five articles of faith, it has long been closely associated with Sikhism since the very beginning of Sikhi in 1469. Sikhism is the only religion in the world in which wearing a turban is mandatory for all adult males. Vast majority of people who wear turbans in the Western countries are Sikhs. The Sikh pagdi (ਪਗੜੀ) is also called dastaar (ਦਸਤਾਰ), which is a more respectful word in Punjabi for the turban.
Sikhs are famous for their many and distinctive turbans. Traditionally, the turban represents respectability, and has long been an item once reserved for nobility only. During the Mughal domination of India, only the Muslims were allowed to wear a turban. All non-muslims were strictly barred from wearing a pagri.

Guru Gobind Singh, in defiance of this infringement by the Mughals asked all of his Sikhs to wear the turban. This was to be worn in recognition of the high moral standards that he had charted for his Khalsa followers. He wanted his Khalsa to be different and to be determined "to stand out from the rest of the world" and to follow the unique path that had been set out by the Sikh Gurus. Thus, a turbaned Sikh has always stood out from the crowd, as the Guru intended; for he wanted his 'Saint-Soldiers' to not only be easily recognizable, but easily found as well.
More appropriately known in the Punjab as a dastaar, the Sikh turban is an article of faith which was made mandatory by the founder of the Khalsa. All baptised male Sikhs are required to wear a Dastaar. Though not required to wear a turban many Sikh Kaurs (women) also choose to wear a turban. For the Khalsa, the turban is not to be regarded as merely an item of cultural paraphernalia.

International Turban Day is celebrated on April 13th every year. This event was started in 2004 to bring awareness of the strict requirement on Sikhs to don the turban as a mandatory part of their religion.

Whether from ancient forms of bigotry or modern-day legal discrimination, Sikhs who wear turbans often find their religion is misunderstood. International Turban Day was created in response to this challenge and it is hoped that by educating the public and the youth, Sikhs will be able to break down the skepticism and negative associations within the larger community.

The turban competition is an appropriate way to remind the public of the turban’s importance to the Sikh faith.
