Pan Mee @ OUG

I'm promoting another hawker stall in the OUG area, the very classical Pan Mee. My elder sister brought me over when I just started to work and they used to operate beside the road within the OUG shoplot premise. I suppose there are lots of complain and eventually the government built a food court named Medan Selera Mega around the corner further back and charge them rental instead. All hawker stalls there are forced to move over, some didn't make it but no problem for this Pan Mee stall.

Been supporting them for nearly 10 years, it's still my favourite dining place. I always love to support our local stalls, they just serve the best food despite the mushrooming of the bigger chain outlet. An experience that make us Malaysian.

The Pan Mee stall typical look at the new location. I throw in a nostalgia touch for this post, thought it suit the scene. Serving secondary aim to please my readers that commented on my overly vivid photos earlier =)

Hey, look at this piece of marvellous machine! It's still working, nice.

My usual order of the night at this place, the Yee Mee. I love their Pan Mee as well, but I always feel hungry after finishing the Pan Mee bowl, so best bet is still the Yee Mee. It's very nice of Yee Mee they are serving here, however it does not fit into the best Yee Mee recommendation. The Yee Mee is good, soup is tasty and the tickling part is the mushroom & pork meat served. It's marinated and it taste very good when you eat together with the yee mee & soup. Take this up if you don't fancy Pan Mee, still equally good.

Highlight of the day, the top selling bowl of the stall, Pan Mee. It's basically the same soup base they are using for the Yee Mee, and the interesting part of the bowl is the pan mee of course. I couldn't put it into words, but it's very good. Anchovies is crispy and tasty, my wife's favourite. It's just a very special bowl of Pan Mee that I couldn't find anywhere else to match it. You will finish every bit of anything in the bowl.

The stall also serves tong sui & drinks, because there is not drink stalls around the area. I got myself the Red Bean Tong Sui. Nothing to shout about, but it's good to keep you busy while waiting for the noodles.

And my wife's regular favourite, Fuk Chuk Yi Mai (Barley with Beancurd Skin).

This is one of the neighbourhood's stall that's available around the old township scattered in PJ & KL. It's part of the experience staying in the big city of old neighbourhood, possibly that's one of the reason why I chose to stay around in Malaysia, despite the "problem".

Overall, the Pan Mee is one of the best available around OUG area. I'm the regular visitor possibly because I'm staying nearby and that's convenient for me. However, if I'm staying further away, I possibly won't be going back. Don't mistaken me, the Pan Mee is very good but I won't be travelling far away to eat it. Supper maybe, but I quit that many years back. You should try it out, and decide yourself if it worths the travelling. Cheers.

Ishin Japanese Restaurant @ Old Klang Road

It's been very long since we've eaten Japanese food, mainly because of our busy schedule. This day I suggested to try out the newly open Ishin Japanese Restaurant at Old Klang Road. It has been getting over thousand fans over the facebook in a few months, so off we go again. Hunting for some better japanese restaurant.

If you are heading towards OUG from Midvalley direction, it's just located on your left opposite the 3rd Mile Square. It's located in a bungalow just beside the main road. Once you reached there, there are surprising lots of staff to guide you where to park. I think they have more staff at the parking than the restaurant. I will share more of my experience below. Here is a shot of the restaurant from the Old Klang Road.

Parking is plenty and they do double parking around the restaurant as well. No jockey parking though, but they will request for you to remove your car if other diners are leaving. I think it's a disturbance in the middle of the dinner to remove your car, but it might well worth it if the food is good. Let's see.

Once we step into the restaurant, it's almost full house and the 1st question from the waitress is "Do you have a reservation?". No, we answer, and we are directed to the bar seat. Not exactly something I expect and fancy when having a dinner with my wife. No choice, so we move over because we have a movie to catch later on at Midvalley. As we are seated, I checked the area and noticed most of the diners are young family with kids. There are also more diners joining in that's ranging around 40-ish couple. All are wearing shorts and leisure home wear.

I suppose Ishin is family orientated restaurant. Maybe they don't wanted to but because of the location, they are attracting local close-by family for frequent visit. A little surprise though, to me, never have the chance to see that in other japanese restaurant. Good or bad? Let's see.

As I'm around the bar seat, a big plus point because I got my dSLR with me. I quickly snap some shots and here it goes. The set-up is a clean and stylish japanese restaurant, maybe because it's still new. However, the place are basically open area and there is not privacy when having your dinner. There are noise and it's not good.

We go through the menu and the price is not very cheap nor expensive. I thought a good sign and I asked the waitress to recommend what's good. There are no photos available and I don't memorise all japanese foods name, but the waitress is not helpful. In the end, I make my own choice. The waitress are attentive but that soon to change. Keep reading.

A basic set-up, we took the ocha and it's tasteful. From my experience, there are two basic things that determine a good japanese restaurant. It is the ocha & wasabi. If both is good, then you can expect everything else is perfect.

A close up with the appetizer, we didn't order this, but add-on from the house. Free stuff, so no complain. It's good, and tofu is good for health. Japanese eat lots of them and they live very long. So take it!

Alright, first to come is the Shashimi Moriawase platter priced at RM58.00. Served with four type of fish & fresh prawns. We never miss to order a shashimi platter, because that's the main highlight. However, it's disappointing that the fish is not very good. Prawn is very great, but not the fish. Don't mistaken me, the food is good, but I'm comparing it to the best japanese restaurant I've ever tried, and it doesn't give a deep impression. I personally think there are much better japanese restaurant out there. The wasabi is also not good. Try it out yourself and let me know.

But do order a plate of shahimi prawn if you are there, it's very good. I think one of the best around the town.

As we continue to savour our shashimi, the chef is preparing our next order. The soft shell crab maki.

Again, to my disappointment, it's not good again. The soft shell crab is not crispy, soft and tasteless. The vege that and japanese rice is also tasteless. The only thing that keep me in finishing it is because of the mayonnaise sauce & seaweed that give my tastebud something to chew on. There are four pieces of maki and it's priced at RM18.00, a price that I'm expecting good maki.

The next up is the Ishin Bento set priced at RM38.00. It is surprising big portion for that price but with the earlier disappointment, we didn't expect much from this. I will do a detailed review of each serving for you.

The saba fish, this is good. Have it with the wasabi, and it's heaven like with your tears rolling down! That's how I eat my japanese food =)

Tempura, again soft and tasteless. I think they pre-prepare it and keep for serving. Bad. The tempura sauce is also not good, tasteless as well.

A mini portion of the shashimi, basically the same with what we have earlier, just a smaller version. Because it's not served with ice, it got heat up and warm very soon. Eat it fast or it will get worse. I put it with my big shasimi ice bowl to keep it cold.

I think miso soup is another way to find out the quality of a japanese restaurant, so far I'm still right. The soup is not good, and same with the food. No comment.

Some brinjal appetizer, nothing to shout about. Just something to make you full.

Last is the chawanmushi. My wife loves it, and of course, she finished it. Nothing to shout about, but at least it's good and ok. No need to mention about the japanese rice, it's tasteless.

Before I reach out for the conclusion, let me clarify my review. This is not a bad restaurant, but just that I have high expectation for this kind of place. The price is not exactly cheap and I'm expecting good food. Comparing food quality to price ratio, this place does not work for me. It's better than fast food japanese outlet, but there are definitely much better restaurant choice in my post earlier, if you fancy some good japs.

Overall, the place is ok, fill with local diners in leisure wear. It's not a place for romantic dinner with your girlfriend or boyfriend, but kids maybe. For me, it's not up to my expectations, and I'm not going back unless there is some drastic changes to the quality or pricing. Another complain is that in the middle of our dining, the place is packed with people waiting at the door steps. The waitress are very busy and they are not attending to us. However, there are at least 5-6 staff outside directing cars, I'm thinking, WTH.

The whole dinner cost us RM132.00, not exactly expensive but not cheap for that kind of quality. The Ocha is good, but priced at RM3.00 each! Most expensive Ocha, but I don't complain on price if the quality is good. I'm more than willing to pay for it, but not the other food. Maybe it's just me that fancy good dinner and willing to pay a good price for it, do comment if you think otherwise. I'm all open. Cheers!

Ah Wang Steamed Fish Head @ Old Klang Road

This time promoting the all time favourite steamed fish head for me and my wife at Old Klang Road. Ah Wang Bak Kut Teh & Steamed Fish Head is located just along the Old Klang Road beside the New Pantai Expressway Flyover. Although the shop signboard indicate both Bak Kut Teh & Steamed Fish, you can forget about ordering the Bak Kut Teh. It's not good at all, unless you suddenly fancy some Bak Kut Teh in the middle of the night, or else stay away.

I normally do late dinner here and there is no single time that I come without at least 80% of the tables occupied, imagine that. Yes, it's that famous. Yes, the food is good. They shop only open after 6pm and I heard my friend said it close at 4am. Not sure how true, never bother to verify =P I love this place because it's near my house. When we are hungry, we just drive off, take a seat and order our regular without thinking. The food is served in less than 10 minutes, finished it within 15 minutes, and off we go. A quick, healthy and relatively cheap dinner.

The photo is taken when we have finished our dinner, and just look at the crowd. It's almost 10pm.

As you can see from the photos, this place is actually street side set-up so don't expect good hygiene. It's clean enough for a pleasant dinner though, and of course, it's not air conditioned. The only thing that we love is the Garlic Steamed Fish Head, other than other recipe of Asam Style and Chinese Bean Sauce Style.

Highlight of the day, and I think we eat this once every month (I only spent 5~6 days a month in KL only). No matter what style of recipe you are ordering, the smallest serving is RM21 as the photo. It's enough for 2 person, but don't order any other thing, unless you are really hungry. Opt for different recipe if you have more people, it's not bad, just that I prefer the garlic style.

The fish is very fresh without muddy taste. The fish flesh is smooth without much bones, and if you fancy fish belly, this place promise you the most saliva dripping experience, ok, a little exaggerated, but it's that good. Important advice, eat when it's still hot. Once it turns cold, it's not that nice anymore, personal preference maybe. Must try.

A must have of special mixture of supplement sauce. Here is how you do it. Throw in little Chili Padi (just enough to give you the spicy taste) then cover up with plenty of garlic. Circularly squeeze the black thick soy sauce till all garlic is covered and final touch it with light soy sauce and stir slightly. We love it this way =)

We complete the dinner with a plate of cabbage with oyster sauce and it's only RM5. The vegetables is very fresh and crispy. No complain.

It's advisable to order the Yau Char Kway and they will serve it with the Bak Kut Teh soup, eventhough you don't order the Bak Kut Teh. The Bak Kut Teh soup is little mild to my liking, prefer the Klang strong herbal type. But a nice addition to your taste bud to the already superb steamed fish head. Anyway, it's only RM1.00, so your choice.

Normally our dinner with arrangement above set us back RM29.00, and I think it worth every cent. It's cheap for such a good quality fish head and the service is very fast. We never spend longer than 10~15 minutes for the food, and even with such fast turn-around, the shop is still pack! Crazy.

Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles @ Taman Danau Desa

There is a shop in the Taman Danau Desa that's very famous with the fish head noodles. I've been hearing of it for very long time, but never have the chance to try. My parents came down to KL for a visit, so my sister took the chance to bring us to try it out.

Don't be fooled by the photo below, The shop name is Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles, not Ho A One Seafood Steamboat. They have taken over the shop for very long time since 2009 but still havent remove the old sign yet. Look clearly, they open from 7.30am till 10.00pm! Impressive, now you know where you can look for some fish head noodles if suddenly you feel hungry at 7.30am or 10.00pm ...

A shot of the front shop, can see even the tables outside are packed!

My dad ordered an additional bowl of fish paste and it's served with vegetables & clear soup. I don't feel anything special about the fish paste or the soup. It's very normal.

There isn't any much choice in this shop, there is only normal fish head, deep fried fish head, fish paste with two type of noodles, yee mee or the one shown above. Obviously I took up the deep fried fish head with normal noodles. Sorry for the photos quality, I forgotten to re-set the S90 before taking this shot. It's taken with ISO800, lots of noise!

Because my wife can't eat fish with bones very well, so I ordered the plain fish meat for her, but the shop said it's not available! What the ... nevermind, I just told her to eat the meat portion and pass me the bones. To my surprise, the bones are crazily a lots!! Look at the photos below!

This is one of the big chunk of fish meat that I've chosen so my wife can eat properly. But after careful checking, there are still lots of small fish bones that can choke you to death! And bear in mind that this piece is the best piece of fish meat that I can find in my bowl! Still ...

This is the result from my bowl, with my experience in eating bones, I'm still having problem in enjoying the meal. My wife didn't eat much too, and she passed me some of her fish.

Overall, the soup is ok, noodles is ok, but the fish bones is NOT ok!!! I don't understand why so many people packed the shop. I asked my dad, my mum and my sister about it, their answer is maybe these people stay around and never go out to eat other fish head noodles. This cannot be the reason, right!? I will never come back to this shop, because there are other much better shop out there, like around in Kuchai Lama. Taste better, much choices and they serve fish meat only (without a single bone) noodles for my wife.

My another complain is the amount of vegetables they put into the bowl. I don't fancy vegetables but I don't have much problem with other shop. This shop just serve too much vegetables until I left over it as above. I'm trying to eat as much as noodles that I can, but there is no way I'm enjoying my meal this way. So bowl abandoned.

Comparing to my wife, she walloped every piece of the vegetables and tell me it's good for health, except for the fish, of course. Hehe...

The experience is bad and it reminds me of my nearly choked to death because of fish bones when I'm still studying in UK. Crazy, I will never come back. Maybe it's just me, I never know so many people is good in eating fish with lots of bones! Just look at the people in the shop, packed from I reached there till I left.

Overall, I do not fancy this shop and I don't think I will go back. The fish bones is the main reason and vegetables issue is secondary but more personal. However, the price here is very cheap, they only charge RM6.50 for a small bowl and RM8.00 for a big bowl. Considerably cheap comparing to other shop, but still, I'm more willing to pay more for a better experience fish head noodles.

Cao Cao Roast Lamb Chop & Best Claypot Yee Mee @ Old Klang Road

ng RI went back to KL for the weekend and we just wanted to have something fast and simple. Immediately I thought of this place near Old Klang Road. It's some road side hawkers and it's truely some gems hidden. Normally I don't carry my D90 around places like these, so this is where the Canon S90 shines =) I asked my wife to grab it along, throw it into her bag and off we go.

We reached the place and I quickly try out the low light capability of the S90 from my seat. Impressive brightness at f/2.0 with little noise notice around ISO 800. Ok, this is the place, Cao Cao Roast Lamb Chop. Take note of the aunty standing beside the bbq pit, that's where the magic takes place, or inferior quality control!

A serving of the famous Cao Cao Roast Lamb Chop served with mint sauce. To me, the most important of having lamb chop is the mint sauce, I will never eat lamb at any place that don't serve the mint sauce. Simple, from my experience, if they don't serve the mint sauce, meaning that they don't know how to serve the lamb.

Take a bite and sunk your teeth into the lamb and you will know why this is voted by many as one of the best lamb chop around the town. The lamb is so tender and juicy and although it looks like medium well done, it's in fact much softer. The aroma of lamb is also not too strong, but enough for all lamb lover. The mint sauce is not particularly delicious, but it supplement the already perfect lamb served. It's a must try for lamb lover.

The plate served is a little pricy, because of their already established fame. Not particular expensive also but it's quite a small piece to start with. I'm not complaining.

I walk around the place and start snapping some bigger view of the place for you to find. It's not that hard to find the place. As when you travelling on Old Klang Road and approaching the pasar, take a turn into the road that's heading towards Kuchai Lama. It's just right at the road side. You will not miss it.

Funny thing is that I found not only 1 gem at this place, but two! Guess what?

The best Claypot Yee Mee in Kuala Lumpur. Did I mentioned that I'm Claypot Yee Mee lover? I savoured every Claypot Yee Mee I encountered everywhere. If it's a foodcourt, you bet what I will order if Claypot Yee Mee is available. I started eating it since primary school and until now, my parents still think I'm crazy =P

Walk across the Cao Cao Roast Lamb Chop store and you will find this place that sell Claypot Yee Mee. It's priced at RM5.00 and this is the best Claypot Yee Mee you can find in KL. Don't waste your time, I tried many places, and this is the best. Why? It's hard to explain in words. It's the combination of recipe that makes a perfect Claypot Yee Mee.

1. The Soup, very important and it must be flavoured with Yee Mee taste all around. A good Claypot Yee Mee will ensure that you turn the claypot slightly and consumed every drip of the soup available, every time! It doesnt happen a single time over thousands, then it's not good enough.

2. The Yee Mee, also very important. You will be surprise that there are many types / quality of Yee Mee used in all other shops. Most of the shops only use the normally found yee mee from the supermarket. I can cook that myself! But shop that's special, they have their own supply of special Yee Mee, the kind that you will not be able to find out there. Where they get it? I'm not sure, maybe you tell me after you asked them. It's different and this shop here serve just that.

3. The Claypot itself. For sure, how can they call it Claypot Yee Mee when they dont serve it in Claypot? Again, you will be surprise that many still doing that. Find a shop that cook the Yee Mee in claypot rather than stainless steel pot. I'm not sure how it works, but it just taste much better that way!

4. The Egg. Take a peek at the photo again. Yes, half cook egg with the yolk still flowing. Puncture the egg and consume the yolk with the incredible soup ... incredible. Erm, this might not best enjoy by everyone, but that's the part I like most.

5. Other ingredients, not very important but just make sure it doesn't "kill" the important matter I mentioned.

Ok, this is the best Claypot Yee Mee, why share with you guys now? I still have another shop that's voted best of best in Ipoh. Again, hawker shop so no chance to take photos. I will blog about it when got chance.

My wife ordered the Char Kuey Teow and it's really not bad. I ordered a small plate with double eggs, and a big plate shown up instead. I thought it's some kind of KL trick again that they will serve you big plate if you dont mention, but this shop is different. Just wait till you see the big one! It's quite good and worth mentioning in this blog, but not the best. Not sure what else to eat, do try it out.

The whole meal cost both of us less than RM20.00, and that's the best I like about hawker shops. Truely gems hidden in the street. Nice.
