Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) in Kapurthala - India’s first sports gallery impresses visitors
If you want to be an excellent hockey player, you are required to strengthen your shoulder, back, upper leg and lower leg muscles.
This basic knowledge and other related valuable information regarding various games is on display at the country’s first gallery on Science of Sports recently opened at the Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) in Kapurthala.
The gallery has been divided into various sections for cricket, volleyball, badminton, lawn tennis, basketball, football, hockey and rural sports, boxing, gymnastic, judo, shooting, hammer throw, shot put, fencing, javelin, pole vault, equestrian, sailing and rock climbing.
Several models at the gallery provide information about history of various sports, ground dimensions, possible injuries and safeguards. This is a virtual learning centre to understand science and sports through a playful and informal approach.
The motive behind setting up the gallery at the cost of rupees one crore was to familiarise visitors with applications of scientific principles in sports - role of gravity, projectile motion, momentum, force, energy, impulse, Newton’s Law of Motion, materials used in equipment etc. and understanding and improving performance in sports.
Abhishek, a student of MGN School Jalandhar, said after visiting the gallery that it provided valuable information about different sports.
Moves in sports are governed by scientific principles and material used has scientific basis. Sportspersons, umpires and coaches often use science and technology knowingly or inadvertently. The gallery makes an attempt to bring science closer to the sports-loving people’s hearts and mind.
As far as the cricket World Cup 2011 is concerned, it left no chance for perceptions, assumptions or doubts about the decisions against run-outs, stumpings, LBWs, catches and boundaries. Players and umpires nowadays use reviews for decisions, based on science and technology.
Most popular restaurant in Siem Reap
Most popular restaurant in Siem Reap
There is a popular restaurant in Siem Reap that is named for this national dish, and their sign boasts of having the best amok in the city. It's located in one of the alleys of Pub street and is alongside other restaurants. There is something about Amok though. When you first sit down at Amok for dinner, you might feel as if you're no longer in Cambodia. The warm decor, the colorful table settings, and the white and blue china all seem to suggest that you're anywhere but Cambodia. It's as if you're tucked in a little, exotic place, somewhere far, far away in the East. But wait a minute, Cambodia does meet that description! It all comes back as soon as the waiter smiles at you. Then you're back in the land of the smiles, Cambodia.
Soon, Patiala residents to get unique IDs
The administration has started work on the project for issuance of the 12-digit unique ID card number for every resident of the district. The card will have eye print, fingerprint and other personal details of the citizen. It will help individuals in utilising government schemes and services.
According to the officials, the project will cover all residents above the age of six months and a help centre will be set up in every village and ward so that no one is left out. “In villages, help of retired teachers and the sarpanch or nambardar will be taken to ensure that the villagers do not face any inconvenience,” they stated.
Patiala DC Dipinder Singh said the ADC (General) was the project coordinator and has been told to ensure smooth completion of the project. “Eye scans of children below the age of one year will not be taken given health restraints, but details of other applicants would be taken, including a government proof of identity,” he said.
In the meeting held here yesterday, the DC further said the list of candidates available with the councils and corporation would be dispatched soon to the officers concerned so that they start the work on the project soon.

Everest conquered, Panipat couple on a real high
On any other day, the roads of this little-known village would have worn a deserted look. However, with the Kaushiks, who conquered the Everest, returning home late last night, the village was abuzz with activity today.
The arrival of 24-year-old Vikas Kaushik and his 27-year-old wife Sushma Kaushik after the two became the youngest couple in the world to climb the most challenging mountain, has become the talk of not only this village but a large number of adjoining villages as crowds poured in here to congratulate the two on their remarkable feat.
Speaking to The Tribune, Vikas said it was three years ago that he developed an inclination for mountaineering after spending some years as an NCC cadet. Vikas, who is pursuing an MSc in computer science from Kurukshetra University, underwent an intensive training programme along with his wife Sushma in Nepal before the big climb.
Vikas said, “It was Sushma’s cherished dream, who did a basic training course in mountaineering in 2004, to climb the Everest. After we got engaged in 2008, she started coaxing me into taking up the challenge along with her.”
He said their fascination for the Everest increased with each passing day and even financial constraints could not hold them back from going on the adventure.
The couple had to arrange over Rs 44 lakh for the expedition, which they collected through loans and help from relatives. “The debt is the last thing on our mind as of now,” said an ecstatic Sushma, who works as a constable with the Panipat police. She said her department was supportive and she never faced any problem in getting leave for the purpose.
Vikas’ cousin, Anil Kaushik, who was overjoyed on their achievement, said when Mamta from Kaithal scaled the Everest last year, the state government offered her a job of a DSP. Vikas and Sushma had gone a mile ahead and had become not only the youngest couple of the world to climb the Everest but also the first Asian couple to do so.
Vikas’ father Lal Chand and his mother Vimla Kaushik, said they were hopeful that the state government would duly reward them for their accomplishment. Sushma’s colleagues said they were thrilled on their achievement.
District police chief Pankaj Nain said Sushma was a promising mountaineer and the grit shown by her had inspired many in the department. He said it was a matter of great pride that one among them had achieved what was considered “unachievable in the first instance”.
Meanwhile, a large number of local politicians, cutting across party lines, made a beeline for the climber couple’s house to congratulate the duo.
