Network18 Sweeps National Television Awards 2011

Network18 channels, including CNN-IBN and IBN Lokmat, swept the News Television awards on Thursday in New Delhi. IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai bagged the Best TV News Presenter Award once again. While CNN-IBN received 18 awards, 12 awards in Marathi went to IBN Lokmat, followed by three for CNBC-TV 18 and two for IBN7.

The 4th annual Punjabi Film Festival 2011 will be held at Amritsar on Sunday, the 3rd of April. The organiser, Navtej Sandhu, has shared that the trend setter event of Punjabi Cinema will be hosted at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Majitha Byepass, Amritsar.

Navtej Sandhu claims that he has been organizing the event purely on non-commercial basis and without any aid from any NGO or the government of Punjab.

PTC Punjabi Music Awards 2011

The nominations for the event that you have all been waiting for, that is, PTC Punjabi Music Awards 2011, have been announced. The nominations were declared in a recently telecast Curtain Raiser Show of the event. The hosts of the show were: Amrinder Gill and Japji Khaira.

Amrinder Gill and Japji Khaira’s Debut on TV today

After his super success as a singer and a good debut on big screen with 'Ik Kuri Punjab Di', Amrinder Gill is all set to debut on Idiot Box. Miss World Punjaban 2006 and heroine of 'Mitti Wajjan Mardi', Japji Khaira is also debuting on small screen with Amrinder. Both are going to host PTC Punjabi’s most popular annual music awards curtain raiser show.

They will unveil the curtain from nominations of 2011. According to sources related to Amrinder, both completed shooting of curtain raiser show last week. While talking to Just Punjabi over phone Amrinder Gill confirmed that he is the part of show. He was contacted by PTC officials few days back and he agreed to host the show. Amrinder said, it was an honour of Punjabi music and it is a great honour for me to host a curtain raiser of the show, which is a beginning of the final event. I was nervous in the beginning as speaking scripted lines were tough for me. But after going through the script and rehearsals it became easy for me. On the other hand, Japji Khaira is very much excited about her first take on small screen. I was nervous till the last moment, but as the shoot begun, everything was in flow. PTC team was very co-operative and Amrinder was great support on sets. I have given my best shot. I hope people will like it. Thunderous Oscar applause for ‘The King’s Speech’

British drama ‘The King’s Speech’, about George VI’s struggle to overcome his stammer, walked away with four major Oscars, including the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor at the 83rd Academy Awards.

On a night, which had no big surprises, the period drama beat out competition from nine other films to be crowned the Best Picture, also won an Oscar for David Seidler in the Best Original Screenplay category.

Directed by Tom Hooper, the Colin Firth starrer is about the British Monarch, who overcame his stuttering problem with the help of an unorthodox Australian speech therapist, to rally the nation through World War II.

Hooper thanked his mother for finding him the script for the movie after she was invited to a play reading. “She’s never been invited to a play reading her entire life before. She almost didn’t go because it didn’t sound exactly promising, but thank God she did. She rang me up after, said, Tom, I think I found your next film,” said the director.

Firth, popularly known as Mr Darcy since his ‘Pride & Prejudice’ days, started his acceptance speech by joking about how the award will help his career. “I have a feeling that my career just peaked,” the 50-year-old actor said.

Firth said that he feared that he may make a fool of himself by dancing onstage. “I’m afraid I have to warn you that I’m experiencing stirrings, somewhere in the upper abdominals, what are threatening to form themselves into dance moves,” he said.

“These urges joyous as they may be for me... would be extremely problematic if they make it to my legs before I get off stage,” he added.

The movie’s screenwriter, David Seidler, used his acceptance speech to jokingly thank Queen Elizabeth II, among others, as well as stutterers everywhere.

“...I accept this on behalf of all the stutterers throughout the world. We have a voice, we have been heard,” he said, repeating the key phrase from the movie.

Nominated in 12 categories, the film was pitted against Facebook movie ‘The Social Network’, which was in the race with seven nominations. The David Fincher movie, however, managed to win trophies in three categories-Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score and Editing.

Christopher Nolan’s hi-tech thriller ‘Inception’ matched ‘The King’s Speech’ in the number count by bagging four Oscars in technical categories like Best Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects.

Natalie Portman won best actress for her role in disturbed ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s dark thriller ‘Black Swan’.

An emotional Portman thanked everyone from her family, friends and fiance Bennjamin Milleipied to the make-up and cameraman of her film.

Boxing drama ‘The Fighter’ won two Oscars-best supporting actor for Christian Bale, and best supporting actress for Melissa Leo, who had both been frontrunners in their category. Leo and Bale, who played mother-son in the movie, were the first to win the golden statue for their supporting roles.

Jimmy Shergill starrer ‘Mel Karade Rabba’ has been declared the best Punjabi movie of 2010 in the PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2011 function held Friday night at Panchkula. PTC has created history by starting Punjabi Film Awards and this was the first ever Punjabi Film Awards function.

Bollywood actress Divya Dutta bagged Best Actress Award for her role in ‘Sukhmani’ while Jimmy Shergill has bagged the Best

Actor award for ‘Mel Karade Rabba’.

Critics Best Actor Award was conferred on Gurdas Mann and Critics Best Actress Award was given to Neeru Bajwa for their roles in ‘Sukhmani’.

Bollywood actors Raza Murad and Satish Kaul were conferred Life Achievement Awards for their contribution to Punjabi Cinema. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda did the honours.

Manjeet Mann wife of Singer, performer and actor Gurdas Mann was awarded with Best Director Award for ‘Sukhmani’.

Jaidev was awarded with Best Music Director Award for ‘Mel Karade Rabba’.

Kailash Kher was given award for being Best Playback singer (Male) for his song ‘Tere Rang Wich’ for the Movie ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’. Shreya Ghoshal bagged Best Playback singer (Female) award for her song ‘Rabba he Rabba’ for the film ‘Sukhmani’.

Punjabi Singer Miss Pooja got Best Debut Female Actress Award for her debut film Panjaban while Best Debut Male Actor award went to Gaurav Kakkar for Chak Jawana.

Bollywood actor Gulshan Grover was awarded Best Supporting Actor award for his role in ‘Virsa’ while the Best Supporting Actress went to theatre personality Nirmal Rishi for her role in ‘Panjaban’.

Popular comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi was the popular choice for Best Performance in a Comic Role for film ‘Mar Jawan Gur Kha Ke’.

Singer Meeka Starrer Punjabi film Mitti also bagged two awards. Sardar Sohi won an award for ‘Mitti’ as Best Performer in a Negative Role while another award went to the film for Best Background Score rendered by Ajay Bisht.

Renowned lyricist Amardeep Gill was awarded Best Lyricist award for title song of film ‘Ik Kudi Punjab Di’.

Ace Cinematographer and Director Manmohan Singh and Rana Ranbir have shared the award for Best Screenplay and Dialogues for ‘Ik Kudi Punjab Di’.

Krishna Ramanan bagged the award for Best Cinematography for ‘Virsa’.

OmKar Nath Bhakri bagged another award for ‘Sukhmani’ for Best Editing.

Story of Gurdas Mann Starrer ‘Sukhmani’ was found to be best and the award for Best Story was shared by Suraj Sanim and Late Manoj Punj.

The glittering award ceremony had performances by none other than Bollywood Star Akshay Kumar and sultry siren Neha Dhupia.
