Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor no more

Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, who ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away today at the Breach Candy Hospital here, family sources said.

He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai.

According to the sources, he was on dialysis for the last few years and was undergoing the procedure at least thrice a week. He was yesterday admitted to the ICU of the hospital.

The actor, who made his debut in Bollywood in 1953, when the film 'Jeevan Jyoti' was released, carved out a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee in 1961.

His new image took ground and his subsequent films were all in this genre later.

Kapoor, hailed as 'Elvis Presley of India', joined the silver screen at a time when his elder brother Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar were the reigning trio.

Kapoor was suffering from chronic renal failure, family sources said.

The funeral will take place tomorrow morning, they said.

Born Shamsher Raj Kapoor on October 21, 1931, Kapoor was the second son of veteran theatre and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

Despite his family background, Shammi's entry into Bollywood was initially not successful even though he worked with major heroines like Madhubala in 'Rail ka Dibba', Suraiya in 'Shama Parwana' and Nalini Jaywant in 'Hum Sab Chor Hai'.

His initial movies flopped at the Box Office. He reinvented himself with 'Tumsa Nahi Dekha' cutting his hair in the famous duck-tail style of the 50s and never looked back since then.

With the success of Junglee in 1961, an entire decade reeled under its colourful impact.

Shammi heralded the swinging 60s and a large part of his appeal was primarily due to the immensely catchy and upbeat numbers like 'Suku Suku', 'O Haseena Zulfo Wali', 'Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche', 'Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera' where he was at his boisterous best.

Even though success came with light weight tales like 'Kashmir Ki Kali', 'Rajkumar', 'Jaanwar' and 'An Evening in Paris', his performances in flicks like 'Junglee', 'Badtameez', 'Bluff Master', 'Pagla Kahin Ka', 'Teesri Manzil', 'Brahmachari' silenced his critics.

'Andaz', which released in 1971, was his last movie as a leading man but his character roles in 'Vidhata', 'Hero' and 'Prem Rog' were well received.

Deepika Padukone turned down Rs 4 crore for a private dance in London. The offer was to perform for a wealthy Punjabi family at an upscale club.

The offer was specific. That she dance only to her Dum Maaro Dum item number. "It was supposed to be a private party with family members and friends only. 

Since Dippy's sporting an extremely sexy look in the song, they wanted her to wear the skimpy shorts and perform the same moves," reveals our source.

 A source from London reveals, "The DMD song has been playing in night clubs. The family who made the offer is extremely rich and wealthy and from Knightsbridge.

They were ready to pay her a bomb just for one song. The actress initially thought it was a joke, but when the proposal came in form of a letter with the amount cited, she was shocked.

She has had many such offers in the past, but has always refused them."

The family was totally disappointed because they had already booked the club and tried to recreate the entire visual appeal of the song.

A source close to Deepika confirms, "The offer was made to her. But she has made it very clear that private parties are not her scene. She wouldn't do it for any amount."

Dippy has been in London for three months now, shooting for Desi Boyz.

He said, apart from Gaiety, the film had been shot at Peterhoff, Chelsea and Bishop Cotton School. Besides this, some of the scenes will be shot in the beautiful locales of the famous tourist spot Chail and in Dharampur, he added.

I hope he will justify to his character. Another thing I liked about Balkar is his dedication towards his character. 

He is working on his acting skills for six hours a day in a private acting school in Chandigarh for almost four months now. We had worked hard on his looks and you will see all new Balkar Sidhu in our movie", Heer added. Desi Munde will launch a young new face Bunty Grewal (Jatin Grewal) in Punjabi cinema. Male lead, Bunty is a known face for ramp. At six feet and a well-sculpted body, this handsome hunk is every one´s dream model.

First Shimla International Film Festival from March 18, 2011

The first Shimla International Film Festival (SIFF) for documentary, short and animation films is being organised by Films Division, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, government of India, in collaboration with Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Himachal Pradesh, from March 18 to 20 at Gaiety Theater here.

The SIFF will showcase some of the best and award-winning documentaries, short and animation films from India and abroad, apart from films by a filmmaker from Shimla. The festival will provide an appropriate forum for filmmakers, technicians and artistes of Shimla to discover and discuss the current and latest trend and techniques in this creative art.

The highlights of the festival will be award-winning films of MIFF and best of Films Division Documentary films, animation films and films on Himachal Pradesh. In addition to these, two films entitled “For Whom The Jingle Bells Toll” and “Spot The Difference” directed by Vivek Mohan from Himachal Pradesh will be screened during the festival. Total 23 hours of films will be shown in the festival.

When Unusual Romances Set Big Screen On Fire

Bollywood's dream merchants have traditionally sold young chocolaty romances, complete with pink roses. But in the last 10 years, a lot of unusual love stories have made their way to the silver screen, be it "Mr

and Mrs Iyer", or "Cheeni Kum" or "Wake Up Sid".

"Mr and Mrs. Iyer" (2002): Aparna Sen is different, so it was obvious that the love track in her movie "Mr and Mrs. Iyer" would not be run-of-the-mill. The director finely wove a love story between a conservative Tamilian Brahmin housewife, Meenakshi Iyer, and a Muslim wildlife photographer, Raja Chowdhury, during a fateful bus journey. The lead pair of Konkona Sen Sharma and Rahul Bose carried their roles so beautifully that it set new rules for on-screen romance.

"Socha Na Tha" (2005): Made by first-timer Imtiaz Ali who teamed up with debutant Abhay Deol and newcomer Ayesha Takia, the young romance saga about a confused young guy exuded freshness in every department - the concept was new, the treatment was fresh, the dialogues were not mushy, the acting was not over the top and the story gelled with the lifestyle of restless GenY.

"Salaam Namaste" (2005): Yash Raj Films, known for creating larger than life love stories, broke the tradition with a live-in relationship story in "Salaam Namaste". In the film, Melbourne-based Indians, played by Preity Zitna and Saif Ali Khan, decide to have a no-strings-attached relationship. The audiences welcomed director Siddharth Anand's concept and thronged the hall.

"Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh" (2005): In the same year came a simple story about simple people. Directed by Chandan Arora, the medium- budget movie revolved around a short middle-class small town simpleton, played by Rajpal Yadav, whose marriage proposal is accepted by a glamorous and highly educated woman, Rituparna Sengupta, and how his insecurities surfaces as soon as he marries her. It's narrated so deftly that you are hooked to it from the first to the last scene.

"Cheeni Kum" (2007): Hindi movie audiences have seen the salt-and-pepper generation getting infatuated with a young girl in "Shaukeen", but R. Balakrishnan took the concept forward with his directorial debut "Cheeni Kum" by building a fruitful romance between a 60-plus chef and a 35-year-old computer expert. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu's flawless performances and crackling chemistry made it a good watch. It was a bold attempt, but it couldn't stump the box office.

"Dev D" (2009): Anurag Kashyap's reinvented take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel "Devdas" in "Dev D" saw protagonist Dev (Abhay Deol) being presented as arrogant and impulsive. The two women in his life are a departure from the women in previous movies. Paro (Mahie Gill) is so bindaas that she uses foul language and even breaks into a gig on her wedding, while Chandramukhi (Kalki Koechlin), a girl from a well-to-do family, gets into prostitution after getting involved in an MMS scandal. In short, it was a raunchy romance full of steamy scenes and sexual innuendos.

"Wake Up Sid" (2009): Nobody would have ever thought of casting Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma to play a pair, but first time director Ayan Mukerji did it for "Wake Up Sid" and the risk paid off as everyone lapped up the story of a young boy falling in love with a simple looking older girl who is trying to make a future for herself in his city.

"My Name Is Khan" (2010): This was a never before seen love story. A man suffering from Asperger's Syndrome reaches New York and falls in love with a single mother and manages to convince her to marry him. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's mature performances made it believable.

"Love Sex Aur Dhokha" (2010): What love - for the soul, for the body or for money - means for the young generation is shown in this film. Violence, foul language, sex scenes, "Love Sex Aur Dhokha" is as explicit as it gets here.

"Yeh Saali Zindaagi" (2011): How a Delhi-Haryana gangster - in a departure from the Mumbai mafia guy - falls head over heels for a singer, who he knows is using him for money and two-timing him, sets this saga apart. While the underplaying Irrfan Khan slips into the role of the gangster with characteristic ease, Chitrangada Singh looks quite believable as the girl who sings at a pub.

Jimmy Shergill starrer ‘Mel Karade Rabba’ has been declared the best Punjabi movie of 2010 in the PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2011 function held Friday night at Panchkula. PTC has created history by starting Punjabi Film Awards and this was the first ever Punjabi Film Awards function.

Bollywood actress Divya Dutta bagged Best Actress Award for her role in ‘Sukhmani’ while Jimmy Shergill has bagged the Best

Actor award for ‘Mel Karade Rabba’.

Critics Best Actor Award was conferred on Gurdas Mann and Critics Best Actress Award was given to Neeru Bajwa for their roles in ‘Sukhmani’.

Bollywood actors Raza Murad and Satish Kaul were conferred Life Achievement Awards for their contribution to Punjabi Cinema. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda did the honours.

Manjeet Mann wife of Singer, performer and actor Gurdas Mann was awarded with Best Director Award for ‘Sukhmani’.

Jaidev was awarded with Best Music Director Award for ‘Mel Karade Rabba’.

Kailash Kher was given award for being Best Playback singer (Male) for his song ‘Tere Rang Wich’ for the Movie ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’. Shreya Ghoshal bagged Best Playback singer (Female) award for her song ‘Rabba he Rabba’ for the film ‘Sukhmani’.

Punjabi Singer Miss Pooja got Best Debut Female Actress Award for her debut film Panjaban while Best Debut Male Actor award went to Gaurav Kakkar for Chak Jawana.

Bollywood actor Gulshan Grover was awarded Best Supporting Actor award for his role in ‘Virsa’ while the Best Supporting Actress went to theatre personality Nirmal Rishi for her role in ‘Panjaban’.

Popular comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi was the popular choice for Best Performance in a Comic Role for film ‘Mar Jawan Gur Kha Ke’.

Singer Meeka Starrer Punjabi film Mitti also bagged two awards. Sardar Sohi won an award for ‘Mitti’ as Best Performer in a Negative Role while another award went to the film for Best Background Score rendered by Ajay Bisht.

Saka Nankana Mahant Massacre (1921) Singhs are martyred when wrestling control of Gurdwara Nankana Sahib (Pakistan), birthplace of Guru Nanak, from corrupt Mahant Narayan Das. The Mahant, who owned an estate adjacent to the gurdwara, took control collecting revenue and offerings made to the Gurudwara. He used the premises for debauchery and encouraged atrocities preying on innocent unsuspecting pilgrims who visited the gurdwara. When confronted by concerned Singhs, he pretended to cooperate all the while stockpiling men and weapons. February 19, 1921 at 10pm, a posse of Singhs from surrounding neighborhoods marched on the gurdwara arriving before dawn on the 20th. The Mahant ambushed and massacred nearly 200 Sikh men and women setting fire to bodies of the dead and wounded.
