Punjab, AP to SC: Ban on ‘Aarakshan’ lifted

Punjab and Andhra Pradesh today informed the Supreme Court that there was no longer any ban on the release of Bollywood film “Aarakshan” in the two states, while the court issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh on a petition filed by producer Prakash Jha seeking a stay on the restrictions against his Rs 65-crore production.

rguing before a Bench comprising Justices MK Sharma and AR Dave, senior counsel Harish Salve contended that the state governments could ban any film, citing law and order problem as a reason, only after the release.

This legal position had been clarified by the judiciary in the case relating to another Bollywood film “Jodha Akbar”, he said.

The Bench passed an order recording the statements of Punjab and AP that “they have withdrawn the orders of restrictions” and directing them to file their affidavits in this regard within three days.

Screening of ‘Aarakshan’ banned

The Punjab Government has imposed a ban on the screening of Prakash Jha’s film ‘Aarakhshan’ in the state till a screening committee constituted by the state submits its report. An official spokesman said the decision had been taken following intelligence reports that some scenes/dialogues in the film could trigger social tensions.

The government has constituted a seven-member committee consisting of Samir Kumar, Secretary, Home, Raj Kumar Atihai, Chairman, Safai Karamchari Board, Punjab, Vijay Danav, Chairman, Scheduled Caste Welfare Board, Punjab, a member of the Punjab Scheduled Caste Commission, VK Bhawra, IG, Intelligence, and the VCs of Patiala’s Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar to view the movie and take a decision.

The Chamar Mahan Sabha said in a statement that the film must be allowed to be released countrywide. Sabha’s president PS Kainth said Jha was known for his commitment to social causes and his ability to handle sensitive issues “to bare the truth before the public.”

Bobby Deol refuses to oblige fans

 Suresh Yamla, grandson of Yamla Jatt, is upset with actor Bobby Deol, who could not spare a few minutes to meet him while in the city. And Suresh's family happens to have permitted the producers of the film 'Yamla Pagala Deewana' to use his grandfather Yamla Jatt's name.

After launching a resort in village Lalton Kalan between Daad and Thakrewal villages on Saturday night, Bobby left the city on Sunday around 8 am. He was gone with the rain that lashed the city in the morning. While many residents enjoyed the showers, others, fans of the actor, were left high and dry as they were not able to get an autograph or photograph of their star.

The family of Yamla Jatt was disappointed too. They had allowed the Deol family to use Yamla Jatt's name in their movie 'Yamla Pagala Deewana' and that too without charging any royalty from them. On Saturday night, grandson Suresh performed at the four-day Baisakhi festival in the city, that concluded last night.

Talking to TOI, Suresh Yamla Jatt, grandson of Ustaad Lal Chand Yamla Jatt, said he and his family had always worked to keep the name of the legend alive. That was the reason he and his family had allowed the Deols to use his name in the movie without charging any royalty from them.

Suresh said even the artists who were accompanying him at the performance were upset that Bobby had not met him. He said it was very difficult for him to face his family members now. 'They had told me to invite Bobby to our place, but when I told them he had a busy schedule and I was unable to meet him, they were disenchanted,' he said. 
He said he had received lots of calls from Deols' hometown as people of Sahnewal were hoping he would visit the town, but they all were also upset when they came to know Dharmendra's son had not even met him.

A waiter had to feel the heat too- He requested Bobby to get a photograph clicked with him, but he refused to oblige him and complained about it to the hotel management. 

Deepika Turns Down Rs 4 crore Offer

Deepika Padukone refuses big money to dance at private bash

Deepika Padukone turned down Rs 4 crore for a private dance in London. The offer was to perform for a wealthy Punjabi family at an upscale club.

The offer was specific. That she dance only to her Dum Maaro Dum item number. "It was supposed to be a private party with family members and friends only. 

Since Dippy's sporting an extremely sexy look in the song, they wanted her to wear the skimpy shorts and perform the same moves," reveals our source.

 A source from London reveals, "The DMD song has been playing in night clubs. The family who made the offer is extremely rich and wealthy and from Knightsbridge.

They were ready to pay her a bomb just for one song. The actress initially thought it was a joke, but when the proposal came in form of a letter with the amount cited, she was shocked.

She has had many such offers in the past, but has always refused them."

The family was totally disappointed because they had already booked the club and tried to recreate the entire visual appeal of the song.

A source close to Deepika confirms, "The offer was made to her. But she has made it very clear that private parties are not her scene. She wouldn't do it for any amount."

Dippy has been in London for three months now, shooting for Desi Boyz. 

Bollywood Actor Bob Christo No More

Australian-born Bollywood ‘villain’ Bob Christo died on Sunday in Bangalore aged 72. He died at Bangalore’s Jayadeva Instituteof Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.Christo was admitted to the hospital yesterday after he complained of chest pain, and it turned out that he had a heart attack. The doctors performedangioplasty and sent procedure on him but his condition continued to be critical.

A qualified civil engineer, Christo came to India to meet actress Parveen Babi and ended up getting a break in Bollywood with actor-filmmaker Sanjay Khan’s film Abdullah in 1980. Christo acted in over 200 Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kanada films.

Some of his popular Hindi films included Qurbani, Kaalia, Nastik, Mard and Mr India. He left films in 2000 and moved to Bangalore and started working in Sanjay Khan’s Golden Palms Spa as a yoga instructor. 

When Unusual Romances Set Big Screen On Fire

Bollywood's dream merchants have traditionally sold young chocolaty romances, complete with pink roses. But in the last 10 years, a lot of unusual love stories have made their way to the silver screen, be it "Mr

and Mrs Iyer", or "Cheeni Kum" or "Wake Up Sid".

"Mr and Mrs. Iyer" (2002): Aparna Sen is different, so it was obvious that the love track in her movie "Mr and Mrs. Iyer" would not be run-of-the-mill. The director finely wove a love story between a conservative Tamilian Brahmin housewife, Meenakshi Iyer, and a Muslim wildlife photographer, Raja Chowdhury, during a fateful bus journey. The lead pair of Konkona Sen Sharma and Rahul Bose carried their roles so beautifully that it set new rules for on-screen romance.

"Socha Na Tha" (2005): Made by first-timer Imtiaz Ali who teamed up with debutant Abhay Deol and newcomer Ayesha Takia, the young romance saga about a confused young guy exuded freshness in every department - the concept was new, the treatment was fresh, the dialogues were not mushy, the acting was not over the top and the story gelled with the lifestyle of restless GenY.

"Salaam Namaste" (2005): Yash Raj Films, known for creating larger than life love stories, broke the tradition with a live-in relationship story in "Salaam Namaste". In the film, Melbourne-based Indians, played by Preity Zitna and Saif Ali Khan, decide to have a no-strings-attached relationship. The audiences welcomed director Siddharth Anand's concept and thronged the hall.

"Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh" (2005): In the same year came a simple story about simple people. Directed by Chandan Arora, the medium- budget movie revolved around a short middle-class small town simpleton, played by Rajpal Yadav, whose marriage proposal is accepted by a glamorous and highly educated woman, Rituparna Sengupta, and how his insecurities surfaces as soon as he marries her. It's narrated so deftly that you are hooked to it from the first to the last scene.

"Cheeni Kum" (2007): Hindi movie audiences have seen the salt-and-pepper generation getting infatuated with a young girl in "Shaukeen", but R. Balakrishnan took the concept forward with his directorial debut "Cheeni Kum" by building a fruitful romance between a 60-plus chef and a 35-year-old computer expert. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu's flawless performances and crackling chemistry made it a good watch. It was a bold attempt, but it couldn't stump the box office.

"Dev D" (2009): Anurag Kashyap's reinvented take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel "Devdas" in "Dev D" saw protagonist Dev (Abhay Deol) being presented as arrogant and impulsive. The two women in his life are a departure from the women in previous movies. Paro (Mahie Gill) is so bindaas that she uses foul language and even breaks into a gig on her wedding, while Chandramukhi (Kalki Koechlin), a girl from a well-to-do family, gets into prostitution after getting involved in an MMS scandal. In short, it was a raunchy romance full of steamy scenes and sexual innuendos.

"Wake Up Sid" (2009): Nobody would have ever thought of casting Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma to play a pair, but first time director Ayan Mukerji did it for "Wake Up Sid" and the risk paid off as everyone lapped up the story of a young boy falling in love with a simple looking older girl who is trying to make a future for herself in his city.

"My Name Is Khan" (2010): This was a never before seen love story. A man suffering from Asperger's Syndrome reaches New York and falls in love with a single mother and manages to convince her to marry him. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's mature performances made it believable.

"Love Sex Aur Dhokha" (2010): What love - for the soul, for the body or for money - means for the young generation is shown in this film. Violence, foul language, sex scenes, "Love Sex Aur Dhokha" is as explicit as it gets here.

"Yeh Saali Zindaagi" (2011): How a Delhi-Haryana gangster - in a departure from the Mumbai mafia guy - falls head over heels for a singer, who he knows is using him for money and two-timing him, sets this saga apart. While the underplaying Irrfan Khan slips into the role of the gangster with characteristic ease, Chitrangada Singh looks quite believable as the girl who sings at a pub.
