Teochew Braised Duck, Kam Heong Restaurant @ PJ New Town

Lots of people know about the famous braised duck in PJ and as a duck lover myself, this is one of my favourite dinner place. Braised style food is originated from Teochew clan, and again as Teochew myself, it's my favourite style as well. Braised style food is basically done by immersed the entire food (duck) into the sauce and use slow fire to cook it until all the sauce is simmered into the meat for maximum flavoured. The slow cooking process also soften the texture of meat till it can be cut by chopstick.

Coming back to the famous shop in PJ that served the most famous Teochew Style Braised Duck is the Kam Heong restaurant in the center of the Petaling Jaya Old Town. This place only open at night and serves only Teochew style food below.

We arrived the place around 9.00pm and it's almost 70% packed. It's always full most of the time, as it seems everytime I went. Find your seat and the waitress will look for you to order. Basically there is nothing much to order, just a few choice available. If no people is coming to you, just take a walk to the counter and order to the lady there. They won't miss you once you are done.

The most famous favourite of the shop, of couse, is the Braised Duck. The sauce is crazily delicious and tasty while the duck meat is soft tendered at the same time. Sauce is fully immersed into the meat making it a dish that "drain" up your rice / porridge fairly quick! A good mixture of meat and skin is best to be eaten together, althought not very healthy, but you will not realise it because it just taste so good. As everyone know, human tends to love solid food to fill the hunger, and this soft tendered meat is not going to fill your stomach / mind properly. If you are hungry, order a bigger portion, I assure you that you will have no problem finishing such a delicious plate.

Teochew Salted Vegetable (Kiam Chay). Teochew all time favourites vegetables around the dinner table, the cooking style is similar to the braised duck, salty sauce covered entire pieces bit of vegetables and slowly cooked till soften and ensure the taste is immersed. This particular plate of salted vegetable got my vote because it's not too salty and just right balance  to eat without rice. I love Teochew food, so might be a little biased.

I've been to this place many times, so I know I'm not going to have enough, so I add up the Teochew Braised Pig Intestine to complete the dinner. I'm a big lover to this dish and you bet I will order this whenever it's available anytime anywhere. My wife don't dare to eat this so this is for me only. Not the best braised intestine that you can find, but a good supplement to the already good dinner.

Need to fill the stomach, so I ordered the rice. A good texture and somehow it goes very well with the braised duck sauce. I'm not sure what they add into the rice, but it sure taste good and soft as well. It's always the entire dining experience that leave you a good impression and the entire food range compliment each other very well. Not only tasty but you know you are eating a very healthy cook food around the PJ or KL area. That's the good thing about Teochew food.

My usual practice, herbal tea without ice to go with my dinner. Healthy and thirst killer after a saucy dinner.

There are other little choice of food as well, such as Braised Pork Trotter, Braised Mushrooms, Duck Intestines and Gizzards and Braised Tau Fu & Egg. Yeah, it's all braised, Teochew restaurant, what you expect? The price is affordable as well, around RM 20 for a dinner, RM10 for each person. I didn't record the exact price for each dish, but it will be around there. Teochew food is healthy & cheap.

My suggestion? Go out there and try this place out. It's the most famous Teochew Braised Duck in Malaysia and I'm all supporting this phrase. This place does really live up to its fame and you will either love it or think it's average. As Teochew myself, I can tell you that it's the best Braised Duck you can find. Normally good food need less review conclusion, I've just said it, it's the best you can find. Cheers.

Yummy Duck Roast House @ Kuchai Lama

Kuchai Lama is really developing fast, few years ago only got a foodcourt with some old shops, now it's booming with condominium, banks and food outlets. Mushrooming fast and I can't keep my blog up to pace with the food outlet opening there!

The next up is the Yummy Duck Roast House that opened up not long ago in Kuchai Entrepreneur's Park. Duck lovers, so definitely not going to miss this. Took a shot of the shop, so far so good. Let's look deeper.

The place is nearly empty, but dont judge by that. I went there at 10.04pm (look at the time) for late dinner, so acceptable. And in addition, all tables behind us are full, so not bad.

My wife would like to have rice and it's served with soup. The brown sauce is for the duck & roast pork.

It's midnight, crazy to have rice, so I opted for Hong Kong Plain Noodle Soup. The soup is very delicious and a generous piece of fresh vegetables as well. It goes very well with the green chilis.

Ok, this is the main highlight of the night. We ordered 3-Combinations priced at RM28.00 consisting of the duck, roast pork and charsiew. You can choose what's the mixture, together with either chicken & honey chicken.

The duck is good and the roast pork is also very good. I rate the food based on good, very good, and fantastic/excellent/god-like/incredible/irresistable. So you make the call. It's not a bad shop and the food is real good, but there are much better shop out there. I will be back for another dinner if suddenly I'm craving for duck in the middle of the night. I know this shop won't fail me though, as other duck shop owner is too rich to open at night =P

I don't even mention the charsiew, because it's not worth mentioning. Next time you go there, order just the duck and roast pork. Forget about the rest, because I'm sure that you won't be going there just to have a chicken rice? Yea, let's move on.

The whole bill comes up to RM36.80 with a drink of Black Pearl Soya that's priced at RM4.50. No tax, so you pay for what you eat. It's a little pricy, consider paying it for your weird sudden crave of duck in the middle of the night.

Manage to capture another view of the shop and they are about to close. It's the new shops that facing the main road and you are not going to miss it. Looking back at the night shot quality done by S90, only one word, INCREDIBLE. Can any other compact get this shot? I'm not sure, it's too long since I shoot night view with my old compact. You let me know.

Restoran Hoppy - Duck Rice @ SS2

We are running around the PJ area and got hungry. We are always hungry. So we opt for duck rice, yeah again. We are really duck lover, so duck rice again. I'm going to make a ranking list for duck soon, after i post up all the shops then we vote ok =P

For this time, we go to the shop that we visit regularly. It's called the Restoran Hoppy at SS2.

I believe lots of people will know this place because the giant duck they hang outside the shop!!

Malaysia weather so hot, really roast duck lo!

So back to food blogging, this is one of the few initial shop that we tried when we start hunting for duck rice.

A view of the front shop. This restaurant is one of the few duck rice shop that offer variety type of foods. I've came here many many times, but I've never tried anything other than their duck rice =P

A view from inside the shop. The place is air-conditioned so it's not that hot. It's fully packed when I got there, really good bussiness.

Usual, potrait shooting while waiting for the food. She is more like thinking, "hmm, should we get a full duck or half duck this time?"

We ordered the half Pie Par Roast Crispy Duck priced at RM20 and the portion is reasonable.

However, since I've tried so many duck, the duck meat texture is just a little hard to my liking. The skin is also not as crispy, but no doubt, it's one of the good duck rice shop around. I'm comparing to the best shop in Malaysia, so don't judge this shop with my comment though. The food here is good or else, why I come often?

The sweet & sour sauce that come with the duck. It taste "different" if you eat the duck together with this sauce. A nice touch of additional flavour to the already good duck.

Chilis, a must have for duck rice. I finished like 2 full small plates of these.

As mentioned earlier, my aim is food. So we go for the Sea Coconut Ice and Chinese Tea Ice due to the hot weather.

The duck sauce underneath the duck. It's very tasteful and as you can see, we finish every bit of the sauce. Mind you, the sauce cover almost the entire plate. Who have the last piece? Of course my wife did =)

The duck rice is one of the best around, or else it won't be shortlisted in my blog. The entire lunch cost us RM25.90 for two and very reasonable. For all duck lovers, try it out and we shall vote later for the best duck rice in Malaysia.

It mentioned 7th branch on the signboard, anyone mind pointing to me where is the first 6 branches?

Kedai Hong Kong Oil Chicken & Roast Duck @ Ipoh

It's been a while since I go back Ipoh, so this time, I'm craving for some local specialty that I have been consuming since kindergarten. I suppose as a Ipoh guy, I should have introduce more Ipoh food for all of you, so let's see.

The best duck rice in Ipoh, but I think it's also the best in Malaysia. I haven't found another duck rice that's better than this one, agreed by my wife. Sometimes it's personal preference, but duck lover wouldn't want to miss this.

The two shoplots entrance located at Tasek. Been eating here since I'm in Kindergarten.

The interior also has a classic ipoh food outlet look that has never been changed since long long time.

All hanging, ready to be served. Notice the lower left got the "cha yuk", fried pork. It's also heavenly good.

We ordered half a duck priced at RM18.00 and two rice at RM1.00 each. The duck is still hot and tender in juice. The skin is very crispy with some herbal taste sauce underneath.

I personally think this is better than some famous duck rice shop in PJ, but as I said earlier, it's personal preference. This shop have a branch at Klang with different name but it taste almost the same. I shall post it up in later time.

Hot day, so we ordered the herbal tea priced at RM2.00. It's a little expensive but it's good.

The total bill come to RM22.00. If you only come with your spouse, then half duck is all you want. It's never enough for either me or my wife if we order anything less than half a duck. But if you do have a bigger group, try out the "siew yok" and it's local food that's ready made at the counter. Oil Chicken is so so, and I have better recommendation in Ipoh, if you are craving for it.

Located at Tasek in Ipoh, it's just right across the Tasek T-junction traffic light that connect to Jusco and Ipoh Town. Ipoh people will never miss it.
