K3K Benta Kaya @ Kuchai Lama

Kopitiam, an usual spot for local to have a quick bite to fill the hunger, or a good time to meet up with some good friends for a good talk. Since the modernisation of Kopitiam concept lead by Old Town, you will find new Kopitiam all around the corner in KL. This particular new Kopitiam caught my eyes and I thought it's a western cuisine outlet, as the name K3K is a little funny. I'm usually conservative in choosing which restaurant to try out, as there are lots of disappointment out there I've encountered. Paying the money but still torturing my stomach is not something I look forward to.

However, we cleared almost all the Kopitiam in Kuchai Lama area, so we decided to give K3K a try. K3K means Kwai Sam Kei, translated from mandarin, but it's clearly mentioned the shop is originated from Kuala Lipis, Pahang since 1955. It's all marketing gimmick, I think. Anyone from Kuala Lipis mind confirming on that?

Now the name and logo is pathetic on K3K as it's not catchy and will not attract people. But once you step into the restaurant, the kopitiam has a very nice setting and environment, and the menu is also nicely done up. I always love beautiful menu, because that's how people over-order normally =)

The shop front of the K3K Benta Kaya and the usual full road side parking in Kuchai Lama area. I normally hate to eat in a congested area, therefore I only visit Kuchai Lama on occassional basis. Let's go to food.

A flip on the menu, and you will immediately notice it has a similarity on other Kopitiam franchise out there but there is a great additional variety as well. As the name K3K Benta Kaya suggest, they are good and proud in their Kaya. The additional variety is a good twist to the boring Old Town Coffee Shop and I like every part of it. Eye catching is what they can do with their Kaya, you just have to check out the menu. We ordered something normal and I continue with my photography.

A counter set-up outside of the kitchen. The whole kopitiam has a dark brown wood theme and yellow lighting soothing the whole place. Staff are attentive and there are even buttons on each table for you to call them. Tested, response within 5 seconds, nice.

An important criteria of a Kopitiam is to have a comfortable environment that allow people to sit there for a long time and chat their life away. While they are chatting there, they will tend to order things to eat or drinks and that's how they earn money. Privacy without disturbance and soothing environment with comfortable chairs are important. That's exactly what K3K is offering. Although the visibility to be spotted is less comparing to other more establised Kopitiam, but it's good enough with a little privacy.

We ordered a Lemon Honey Shake that's priced at RM5.80 and a Iced Water for RM0.80. Reasonable enough and they refill the water for me without additional charges. The Lemon Honey Shake is good but not spectacular. There are lots of variety and I'm sure you can find something that fancy you.

We decided to order something lighter so we can order more and I choose the Roti Jala Curry Chicken that's priced at RM6.80. The curry chicken is quite similar to the Old Town and the roti jala is good. I love Curry Chicken so I clear everything up before anything else arrive.

Since K3K is so famous with their Kaya so we decided to take up some bread with it's Kaya. This particular bun caught my wife's eyes and it's called Soft Bun K3K Special priced at RM3.80 only. The topping is chocolate, the skin is crunchy, the bun is soft and the Kaya is watery. What does it means? It means it's great! The kaya is truly special and it's not some normal kaya paste that you taste out there. It's a little lighter and watery.

The kaya blend greatly into the soft bun while the crunchy skin gives your teeth something to do. We love every bit of it and again we walloped everything before the 3rd dish arrive. Not sure if the serving is slow or ware eating too fast, hehe.

My wife don't want to be Malaysian that night, so she goes western. She ordered the Almond Sliced Chicken Chop that's priced at RM14.80 and the serving is big! A genourous amount of baked beans, coleslaw, french fries, special sauce and the chicken chop that's covered by almond. I should have put my hand for you to compare the size.

As usual, she munch her way of all side dish while I do my magic in cutting the chicken to appropriate portion for her. Am I a good husband? I do that almost everytime if I'm free! If yes, please tell her. If not, keep to yourself and send me a private email, I will see how I can do better =P

The chicken chop, can you see how big is the serving? All side dishes are great and the chicken is tasty as well. Almond as usual a little tasteless but the sour sauce put the whole experience in the right place. My wife doesn't like the sauce but I dipped everything into the bowl. I hate dry food, so sauce is compulsary. Even if I eat Maryland Chicken Chop, I will top up a gravy for go with it. Delicious plate, thumbs up and I think this is my first Almond Chicken Chop!

The whole dinner cost us a total of RM39.40 inclusive of 10% service charge only. If you go calculate the food price with the bill, it doesn't balance up. Because my wife order a take-away cup of Benta Kaya that's priced at RM3.80. The kaya is nice and since we bought some Gardenia bread, decided to take a cup to go with it. The Kaya is good and you must try out their Kaya with any other things. Other foods are great as well, another good affordable Kopitiam to visit next time, only the parking is killing me.

As when we are leaving around 8pm+ there is a live singing band going on, good music, good environment, what else you are looking for? They have franchise opened everywhere, check out their website!

D' Rich, King of Good Food @ Kuchai Lama

I frequented Kuchai Lama a lot, of course it's because of close proximity to my home. As we are exploring the food there, we noticed a new place named the D Rich King of Good Food. King, that's quite arrogant for that name of a restaurant. Why not, let's try it out then.

I noticed they also have a branch in SS2 that showcasing their big word of D with a crown on it. I suppose it should be not that bad with the crowd in the restaurant. So my next visit to Kuchai Lama, I give it a try.

The restaurant set-up is cosy, clean and very neat. It's a little different from the usual kopitiam that you can find all around the town, but I love the environment. Good open air concept with healthy air flow and air conditioned. The seat is also more comfortable with good amount of waitress around the shop. It's a little empty when I got there, maybe because of the location of the shop, it's a little hidden if you dont look properly.

New to the place, I took a quick peek around the menu.

They have some interesting choice on the paper, like these kind of soup in the bread. They called it D Rich Soup. It's definitely a must try to me, since it's a little special from the usual menu you can see anywhere else. Let's see what else they got.

Lots of snacks in every type of culture.

They got D Rich in everything, including the usual half boiled eggs. That's something special, but eggs for dinner, I will pass. Not sure if they do open in the morning though. Need to check.

We got one of their specialty with soup in the bread, D Rich Mushroom Soup priced at RM6.90. The soup is good and the bread is ok. Not bad on the food quality but it's not really that special though. Maybe should try out the other type of soup instead.

I'm hungry, so I got myself a set of Black Pepper Chicken Chop that's served with fried rice and vegetables. Chinese style of chicken chop. The rice is good and the chicken is also nicely done up with good sauce. This plate is priced at RM16.90. A little pricy but the portion is quite big, considering a full size chicken chop with a bowl of rice serving.

Then there are plenty of choice for drinks, we took up this Lychee Cincau that's priced at RM5.10. A squeeze of lemon is giving a twist to the drink. Refreshing, again, only a little pricy.

If you notice that I didnt commented much on their food, meaning it's normal and good food. Not exactly anything exciting but a good alternative of food other than the usual kopitiam that you can find. If you are looking for a proper dining with a good place for a long chat & drinks, then this place is suitable. Importantly, its local and I love to support local food.

A closer view of the waitress in action printing out my bill. Love the open kitchen concept.

The entire dinner cost us around RM31.80 with 10% service charge. Not exactly cheap and it is still affordable. For younger population where money is a contraint, I think they will flood the old town comparing to this place. The small cost is a deal breaker for them sometimes. Mind you, we only got 1 main dish with soup and a drink. You can eat lavishly in old town or pappa rich. Your choice.

Chilli Padi Restaurant @ Kuchai Lama

I'm always in the hunting mood for food to be posted in my blog, and since I'm staying so near to Kuchai Lama, no reason for me not to visit every shops there. One of the restaurant that existed as long as I've stayed, is the Chilli Padi Restaurant.

Knowing it's a restaurant that serve local food, funny enough, I never visited it after a long 4 years. Mainly because whenever I go to Kuchai Lama, I'm seeking for a simple quick road side dinner. Since the closing of the main food court there, I seek out new dining experience in the area and this place eventually caught my attention.

The restaurant is very big, but it's quite empty when we got there. There are lots of waitress ready to serve but only 10-20% of the area is occupied. Behind the glass wall is the smoking area. Clean decoration and family like set-up of cashier & kitchen beside the dining area.

Tom Yam Soup. A good overall soup, with a fair bit of ingredients. It's served hot and spicy. Nothing to shout about, a nice compliment to our dinner experience because we love Tom Yam =)

Salted Egg Yoke Fried Rice. I can't help to order this when I spotted the name in the menu. I love this dish since long time ago and didn't expect to find it here as well. For those that don't like the salted egg, don't worry. The fried rice is not going to taste like salted egg though, but a nice creamy and fragnant of egg yoke around the rice, without the salted thing. The rice is nice, and also some bit pieces of fried chicken complete the dish. However, the serving is a little too big, and it might become a little disgusting to consume entire plate. It's ok with me, definitely not for my wife. You should try if you love salted egg.

Nasi Lemak. My wife playing safe and order the most original local food. Overall the Nasi Lemak is good, fragnant coconut rice, tasty sambal, nice curry chicken and etc. A good overall plate, but it's not something that I will purposely go back for it. I'm comparing to the good Nasi Lemak that I posted earlier and this is no where near it, however this should be still better than what you can find on the road side or any other shop.

A special drink that I spotted in the menu as well. It's entirely local, grass jelly with cendol and gula melaka (palm sugar). A nice twist over the original classic drink in Malaysia, good for local folks, but foreigner not familiar with Malaysian drink might find this a little weird. Strong gula melaka taste with freshing grass jelly feel. There are some interested choices in the menu as well, you should take a look.

I've seen a fair number of franchise shop around the Selangor area but I just couldn't find any information about this restaurant online, even a food review about it. Funny enough, I'm not sure if it's actually a franchise bussiness. I visited the Kuchai Lama place and spotted one in Kinrara as well.

Overall, the food is good. I didn't include the price in because I lost the receipt. I will try to update it when I go back next time but I doubted so. Not because the food is awful but I'm always looking for new place to try out as food blogger. If you would like to have some local dish around the Kuchai Lama area, do try out this place. It existed as long as I stayed, it meant something and I love supporting local bussiness that have a good quality. Cheers.

Yummy Duck Roast House @ Kuchai Lama

Kuchai Lama is really developing fast, few years ago only got a foodcourt with some old shops, now it's booming with condominium, banks and food outlets. Mushrooming fast and I can't keep my blog up to pace with the food outlet opening there!

The next up is the Yummy Duck Roast House that opened up not long ago in Kuchai Entrepreneur's Park. Duck lovers, so definitely not going to miss this. Took a shot of the shop, so far so good. Let's look deeper.

The place is nearly empty, but dont judge by that. I went there at 10.04pm (look at the time) for late dinner, so acceptable. And in addition, all tables behind us are full, so not bad.

My wife would like to have rice and it's served with soup. The brown sauce is for the duck & roast pork.

It's midnight, crazy to have rice, so I opted for Hong Kong Plain Noodle Soup. The soup is very delicious and a generous piece of fresh vegetables as well. It goes very well with the green chilis.

Ok, this is the main highlight of the night. We ordered 3-Combinations priced at RM28.00 consisting of the duck, roast pork and charsiew. You can choose what's the mixture, together with either chicken & honey chicken.

The duck is good and the roast pork is also very good. I rate the food based on good, very good, and fantastic/excellent/god-like/incredible/irresistable. So you make the call. It's not a bad shop and the food is real good, but there are much better shop out there. I will be back for another dinner if suddenly I'm craving for duck in the middle of the night. I know this shop won't fail me though, as other duck shop owner is too rich to open at night =P

I don't even mention the charsiew, because it's not worth mentioning. Next time you go there, order just the duck and roast pork. Forget about the rest, because I'm sure that you won't be going there just to have a chicken rice? Yea, let's move on.

The whole bill comes up to RM36.80 with a drink of Black Pearl Soya that's priced at RM4.50. No tax, so you pay for what you eat. It's a little pricy, consider paying it for your weird sudden crave of duck in the middle of the night.

Manage to capture another view of the shop and they are about to close. It's the new shops that facing the main road and you are not going to miss it. Looking back at the night shot quality done by S90, only one word, INCREDIBLE. Can any other compact get this shot? I'm not sure, it's too long since I shoot night view with my old compact. You let me know.

100dC Steamboat, Teppanyaki & BBQ Restaurant

My wife tried out a new steamboat shop in Kuchai Lama and she wanted to bring me over. It's called 100 degree Celcius Steamboat, Teppanyaki & BBQ Restaurant (100dC), funny name but I suppose it means water boiled at 100dC. People are queuing around the shop and we are lucky to get a table for two immediately.

The shop is spacious, clean and stylish. Immediately I scouted around the menu and start ordering, we are starving. The first page explains the restaurant concept, but I got no time to read! I need food ...

Being a special steamboat shop, it offers a total of 9 type of soup base for you to choose, including Original Soup, Tom Yam Soup, Curry Soup, Fish Head Soup, Porridge Soup, Golden Porridge Soup, Herb Soup, Bak Kut Teh Soup, and Thai Sour & Spicy Soup. Phew, long list, but good to know =) Not sure if I missed out anything here ... hehe ...

A choice of the Pick-and-Grill section. The food is also available in the menu, unless you would like to choose your own fresh food as shown above. Looks yummy, especially the meat stick.

Sauce section. Multiple choice of sauces to supplement your food. Someone need to guard the table, so I sent my wife!

My wife made her choice and took back as above. I'm a tradition man, just like the normal chilies =) The rest are too exciting for me. Hehe ...

We wanted to try out other choices, so we opted for the 100dC Sliced Beef Steamboat Set at RM22.80 for a single person. Where is the beef? It comes with next plate of following photo.

The beef is sliced in generous portion for a single person. Seriously, the entire portion is big and I don't think it's for a single person, unless you are really hungry. We wanted to order other grill stuff, so ...

Each single steamboat set only provide you with a single pot and single type of soup. We opted for the Bak Kut Teh because of the recommendation from the waitress. He said he takes Bak Kut Teh soup every night after work. The soup is normal, not too strong but it get very tasty after we mixed up the food & vegetables. Wonder why he choose Bak Kut Teh every night, is it other soups not nice? Not sure, shall try others next time.

One funny thing, the shop name is 100dC but the electronic boiler control allow you to throw in from 0dC all the way up to 240dC!! You will see the soup boil immediately, it's the first shop that allow me to set such a high temperature. Most of the time, I would stay at 80dC till 140dC, from keeping warm to cooking. Really need 240dC? But nice to play though =)

We love fish, so we took up the Grilled Stingray at RM16.80. We chose the Nyonya sauce and it's almost similar to what you got outside. The fish is fresh and again, the portion is very huge. We almost couldn't finish everything!

For drinks, I took up my favourite, Yam Pearl Milk Tea at RM4.50. Cheap for a restaurant like this but not a good choice if you are thirsty.

My wife took up the Honey Milk Longan at RM4.50. It's too sweet, and funny, they use Chinese longan type for this, thought expecting the white longan. Funny.

The total bill round up to RM51.05 including 5% service charge. A considerable cheap dinner for two adults! I thought it would cost more than RM60 considering their decoration and ambience. I've tried many steamboat restaurant, including the Shabu Shabu One Plus (premium steamboat restaurant) and the famous steamboat restaurant in Sri Petaling. This shop steamboat food is so-so only. No doubt a good try for cheap and quick dinner. It's nice for a little gathering & chit chat session as well.

Will I be back? I don't think so. I would just prefer the more traditional chinese steamboat restaurant nearby my place at Sri Petaling. I'm always looking into food quality, so it's preference. You might like this shop, so try it out.
