Say ‘no’ to ragging

IT is said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. This truly stands correct in the case of ragging. Though ragging was intended to provide good humour and harmless fun to students, today it has assumed torturous, vulgar and inhuman forms that defy all norms of decency and morality. What began from a friendly introduction turned to disgusting and perverted overtones.

Ragging is an act of aggression committed by an individual or a group of individuals over another individual or a group of individuals and by virtue of their being senior, somehow get the authority and audacity to commit the act to the freshers of the institution. It is any act which causes, or is likely to cause, any physical, psychological or physiological harm of apprehension or shame or embarrassment to a student, and may include teasing or abusing of playing practical joke, or causing hurt to any student, asking any student to do any act or perform any thing which he/she would not otherwise be willing to do or perform.

Ragging is supposed to have its origin in certain European universities, where seniors played practical jokes at the time of welcoming freshers to institutions. Gradually, it became popular throughout the world. However, with time, it has assumed obnoxious and harmful connotations and needs to be severely condemned. Today, almost all countries of the world have enacted stern laws that ban ragging and it has been completely eradicated in countries such as Canada and Japan. But sadly, India, which inherited ragging as a legacy from the British Raj, has not been able to free itself from the clutches of this inhuman practise which is believed to be a major factor that often leads to campus violence and suicides in educational institutions. India and Sri Lanka are the only two countries in the world where ragging exists in the most condemnable form.

Ragging is not merely a socio-legal problem, it has a certain psychological basis that nurtures a sense of authority in an individual, which boosts his morale and puts him on a high by having the freshmen always at his command. Senior students believe that since they were ragged, they have the right to rag their juniors. It also gives them an opportunity to satiate their sadistic pleasures at the cost of a poor freshmen’s imagination. But not always all seniors who commit ragging enjoy doing it at their will. Seeing most of their batchmates indulging in ragging, they fear being left out and to avoid isolation, they too join the herd. Many senior students live under the misconception that ragging makes a style statement and thus will put them in the “influential crowd” of their college.

Let us examine some shocking forms of ragging. Some of the most popular forms prevalent in institutions are prescription of weird dress code which may make the freshmen feel awkward and uncomfortable as it often brings them unnecessary attention from everybody. Formal introduction as asking the freshmen to introduce themselves in pure local language. Verbal torture involves indulging in loose talks. The freshers may be asked to sing the lyrics of any vulgar song or use abusive language while talking to the seniors. Severest form of ragging that takes place in colleges is sexual abuse and the freshers are forced to try drugs thereby driving them into addiction.

In many cases, the freshers have been asked to strip before the seniors. They may be asked to enact scenes from a particular movie or mimic a particular film star, doing silly scenes, proposing to someone from the opposite sex, etc. Students who stay in hostels are most vulnerable to ragging. They may be asked to do all odd acts from cleaning the room of seniors to washing their clothes. This leads to loss of individuality and break the self-esteem of a newcomer. The fear engenders feelings of bitterness and revengefulness, which is often taken out on juniors next year.

According to a report by the Indian anti-ragging group Coalition which analyzed 64 ragging complaints in 2007, over 60% of complaints were related to physical ragging, and 20% were sexual in nature. India’s only registered Anti Ragging NGO, Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) has noted 7 reported ragging deaths in the year 2007 alone and 31 reported deaths in the period 2000-2007.

Edu Dept facilitates ‘charity’ for NGO, DGSE orders probe

NGO purportedly working to create awareness on AIDS/HIV

A curious case of government senior secondary schools being asked to donate money to an NGO, purportedly working to create awareness on AIDS/HIV, has come to light in Bathinda.

The schools have been made to pay Rs 2,500 per cluster for the Delhi-based private NGO. Bathinda district has 46 clusters and each cluster has six to 13 schools in it. This way, the department has managed to collect an estimated Rs 1,15,000 for the NGO in the last 15 days when the drive was first started.

The schools were directed to collect the amount as charity. While in some schools, the teachers paid the amount, in others, it was the students who were made to pay.

The issue was duly listed on the agenda at the monthly meeting held at the Teachers’ Home today. The agenda even mentioned the schools that did not pay the amount. This includes the Government Senior Secondary School (Boys), Balianwali, government schools at Bhai Rupa, Bhagi Vandar, Bhagta, Maisarkhana, Maluka (Boys), Rampura Mandi (Girls), Sheikhpura, Bathinda (Girl), Kalyan Sukha, Goniana (Girls and Boys), Kotshamir, Kuti and Maur Mandi (Girls).

Soon, single test for college entry

The government is hopeful of conducting the first common entrance exam for entry to all colleges and universities in the country by 2013. The proposed exam will, in one go, test aspirants for all undergraduate (UG) courses, thereby ending the era of multiple examinations for admission to higher education institutions.

This hope was voiced by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal in Parliament today when he was engaging with Lok Sabha members before the passage of the National Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2010 which will make amendments the NIT Act 2007 to include five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvanthapuram as institutes of national importance.

Discussing the way forward for higher education reforms, Sibal said, “I hope to have a common entrance exam for entry to the university system in 2013.”

The minister added that the proposed exam would have two components to assess students for their core skills - results of Class XII exams and results of a SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test is a standardised exam for admission to colleges in the US) type exam.

10 Reasons Not to Buy an iPad Instead of a Laptop for a College Student

The summer season is almost over. If you're a parent that means back-to-school shopping is right around the corner.
And there's one product — one fairly expensive product -- likely to be in high demand for college-bound students in particular: The Apple iPad!
But as dealnews' media editor Jeff Somogyi says there are 10 reasons why you should NOT buy your kids an iPad — especially in place of a more traditional laptop.
"It is a great product [and] I have the utmost respect for Apple," Somogyi tells tells The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task in the accompanying interview. "But in this instance I think that the cost per benefit is a little too high especially when it comes to students."
The tablet device starts at $499 for the most basic model with 16GB of storage with Wi-Fi connectivity.  Meanwhile, the higher-end 64GB models with 3G connectivity start at $829 and expect to pay an extra monthly fee if the wireless Internet plan is enacted.
"You can get a very nice laptop for that price," he says. "You can get a laptop that does everything that your student needs it to do for less than the low end iPad."
Not only can you save money, a laptop will enable students to do all the things they need to do — like write 500-word papers -- easier and more conveniently.
Which brings us to Somogyi's top reasons to not buy your student and iPad for back to school: It's expensive and it's not the best solution for note-taking or editing documents.
If these two reasons alone are not enough to convince your child that the iPad is not the right choice for them, here is Somogyi's full top ten list of reasons why you should not cave and buy your child the iPad:
#1 It's Expensive
#2 It's Not the Best Solution for Note-Taking or Editing Documents
#3 It's Too Distracting
#4 It's Ultra-Portable and Ultra-Droppable
#5 What Makes it Desirable to your Kid is What Makes it Desirable to Criminals
#6 It's Meant for the Enjoyment of One Person, Which Means Social Seclusion
#7 Digital Text Books are a Marvel, but There's No Secondary Market
#8 It's a Status Symbol, Plain and Simple
#9 It'll Already be Old Technology by the Time You Buy It
#10 They'll Also Want a Laptop, Too

SSA conducts survey again

In a statewide survey conducted for the proper implementation of education schemes in 2011-12, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Authority, Punjab, traced as many as 30,939 children in the age-group of 6-14 years, who had either left the studies mid-way or were never enrolled in the schools.

However, the whole exercise, carried for at least two months (November and December in 2010), proved to be more or less futile as the staff assigned the task, failed to perform it in a proper way.

As the flaws in the survey report surfaced, contradicting the data collected, the SSA Authority, Punjab, was left with no other option but to conduct the survey again.

To cover the blunder, the SSA Authority has launched the operation again, terming it as a special survey to check the figures of the children in the age-group 6-14 years who were either drop-outs or had not enrolled for school.

However, directing the deputy commissioners and district education officers (secondary as well as elementary education) not to allow any inaccuracy in the details, the state project director, the SSA Authority, Punjab, B. Purushartha has set different levels of activities to fix the responsibility of officials for the irregularities if detected this time.

The project director has also made the sample checking of the data collected compulsory for the school heads and other officials. Besides, each official, after the completion of the task, would have to give a certificate that no child in his respective area was left unnoticed.

The special survey, which is primarily focused on correcting the previous figures, is to be completed this month. Finding the SSA Authority to be strict this time, the staff at all levels has geared up and the teachers assigned the duties as inspectors have started door-to-door visits to collect the data.

Besides visiting all the towns, villages and even the colonies located on the outskirts, they are also collecting information about migrant labourers working at brick kilns, railway stations and also at the under-construction buildings.

Filling up 29-point proforma, the inspectors are mentioning the details about the reasons for the children staying away from schools.

Confirming the details, senior officials in the state education department informed that the exercise was being performed in compliance of the Right to Education Act under which the state was bound to bring each child (6-14 years) to school and educate them up to class VIII.

Future in Automotive engineering and designing

Automotive engineering and designing can open up new vistas for students in the fast growing automotive industry in India
With Pune being an automotive hub for some of the major car and bike manufacturers, one of the newer career options that is coming up in the city include that of automobile design and transportation design.

All clubbed under the common topic of industrial design, transportation design and automotive design are fields that offer design engineers a chance to take up a lucrative high paying career in these fields. “The reason automotive engineering finds a lot of prominence in the industry today is because of its sudden growth in the current market. Also, with India emerging as a market for potential international automobile brands, this is a career choice that engineers can select,” informs S V Chaitanya, HOD of Mechanical Engineering Dept. at AISSMS College of Engineering.

Chaitanya further informs that automotive engineering is best studied as a post-graduate course, as it helps the student get his basics in mechanical engineering in place. “By the university standards, we have a two-year full-time post-graduate course in automotive engineering. Students are taught automobile engine design, vehicle dynamics, automobile materials, safety and emission norms, and so on, over the two year period,” he says.
The course can either be studied as post-graduate diploma or directly after class XII. Although, if studied after engineering, it limits the scope for other engineers, as it is a core mechanical engineering related branch. Throwing more light on the course of transportation design, Umesh Tahsildar, executive director and CEO of DSK International School of Design, says, “Transportation Design mainly involves teaching students how to design vehicles that are used for transportation of people. It includes both the interior and exterior design for vehicles and unlike other design courses, is a more practical course.”

Jobless teachers want TET condition deferred

The Unemployed B.Ed Teachers’ Front, Punjab, today asked the state government not to declare the results of teacher eligibility test (TET) in the larger interests of the unemployed teachers.

The government has also been asked to defer its decision on the TET condition for the recruitment of teachers at least for two years, as it has decided to implement the Right to Education Act fully in 2013 in the state.

Stating this, spokesman of the Front Harjit Jeeda said that after the TET was conducted in the state on July 3, there was great disappointment among the unemployed teachers, including music and art and craft teachers, as they had to answer the questions from science and mathematics subjects in the test.
Jeeda also asked the government not to implement the TET condition on the unemployed teachers at the time of recruitment in near future. He said the TET was not a parameter to judge the ability of unemployed teachers. He said in case five per cent unemployed teachers cleared the test then what would be the fate of the remaining teachers.

Jeeda announced that they were now planning to launch a mass movement to compel the government to scrap the TET. He said they would now go door to door and convince unemployed teachers about their agitation plan. After that, district-level and state-level conferences would be held.

Regarding their recent agitation against the TET, he said the Front had not given any call for the boycott of the test, which is why the majority of unemployed teachers appeared in it. But later, the same unemployed teachers were saying that the Front’s stand with regard to scrapping of the TET was right, he added.

He said their agitation would continue even during and after the ensuing Assembly elections if the government did not scrap the TET.

The Unemployed B.Ed Teachers’ Front, Punjab, has asked the state government to defer its decision on the TET condition for the recruitment of teachers at least for two years, as it has decided to implement the Right to Education Act fully in 2013 in the state.
