Whenever our truck stopped at river crossings, many a child and young woman would come running up with a platter of fresh munchies. Skewered and grilled tarantulas, or sometimes baby birds, were the jungle Doritos.A very common delicacy was a fertilized duck egg – served raw. One breaks open a hole in the top, sprinkles in some salt and pepper, stirs up the greyish fetus and amniotic fluids, and savors by the spoonful.
