It’s pretty inevitable that if you go to Cambodia you’re going to end up in Phnom Phen, and there are a lot worse places you could be. The city is a haven for backpackers and more traditional tourists alike as it is easily assessable by air, road or train and has plenty to do. For the best value accommodation head for the lake. The lake itself is currently being filled in so expect lots of dust in the area but a room away from the water won’t have the problems. Many of the hotels in the area boast they are Angelina Jolie’s hotel of choice when she’s in Cambodia, but don’t believe everything you read.
