Over 60 per cent of the population in Punjab resides in rural areas although the share of urban population has gone up in the last one decade, according to official data.
"Of the 27,704,236 people living in Punjab, 17,316,800 (62.7 per cent) live in rural area whereas 10,387,436 (37.49) are in urban places," Census Operations Director Seema Jain said. She said the share of urban population has increased to 37.49 per cent in 2011 as compared to 33.92 per cent in 2001. The literacy rate in the state also increased from 69.65 per cent in 2001 to 76.68 per cent in 2011, Jain said.
