Google considers your site to be a content farm

In my opinion Google’s classification of content farms has gone a bit too far. High quality websites such as Qype, Review Centre, Ciao etc have been hit heavily, in addition to the more likely candidates such as various article directories and content production networks like ehow.com. The list of winners and losers from the UK update (by Searchmetrics) is interesting reading too, and looking at some of the sites listed, my personal opinion is that they’ve treated some of these too harshly and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are further changes and tweaks ahead. Long-term the panda update makes sense – but short-term there’s probably still a way to go yet until Google gets this completely right.

1. Remove content – if your website has a high volume of pages, then it’s likely that a number of these aren’t generating traffic and are perhaps listed in Google’s supplemental index. This is now a great time to review those pages which may not be having any SEO benefit for you and looking to trim down on the volume of indexed content that you have in the search engines. Obviously this is something you need to consider carefully, but by removing 20-25% of your website’s lowest performing indexed content you could find that your website is now valued more highly as a result of the overall quality improving.
2. Make sure your content is unique – before the Panda update, automated content was a very effective method of ranking for a wide range of terms in Google – in all honesty this probably worked too well and shows that the Panda update is intended to improve the quality of results. But if you were one of those sites that benefited from this in the past, and has recently lost out, then it’s probably time to look at methods of making your content more unique in the eyes of Google. Often it may just be a small change or tweak which triggers Google’s algorithm, and if you can figure out the reason for this then you’re likely to quickly see an increase in rankings return again very quickly.
3. Stop low-quality link building – the websites which have suffered the most from the knock-on effect of devalued links are those who rely on low-quality links too heavily. High volume, low quality link building has always been a big sign to Google that this is an unnatural pattern of inbound link, but following the update it’s now going have even less of an impact to search rankings.
4. Create a natural link building strategy – you’ve heard everyone saying for years that “content is king”, blah, blah, blah. Well if you’ve been affected perhaps it’s something you should have listened to more intently! The biggest winners from the Panda update are those which are providing quality, engaging content – it’s no surprise to see the likes of Econsultancy, The Independent, Techcrunch and amongst the list of those who benefited the most. So try and look at putting those high volume link building or content budgets into something more valuable. If you focus on quality of content and adding value, instead of quantity, then you’re likely to see a much greater return from your efforts and activity.

Seperti dikutip dari REUTERS, kemarin, Demi mengetahui seluk-beluk ATM, Jack sampai membeli sendiri mesin ATM melalui internet. Pada konferensi tahunan Black Hat itu, Jack menunjukkan bagaimana ia meng-upload perangkat lunak buatannya yang disebut Dillinger.


Setelah menjangkiti mesin ATM, software Dillinger akan mendekati dan menginstruksikan mesin untuk mulai mengeluarkan uang tunai. Nama Dillinger mengacu pada sosok perampok legendaris Amerika Serikat, John Dillinger. Sementara software untuk ATM itu buatan perusahaan Tranax Technologies.

Jack menggunakan kunci yang tersedia di internet untuk membuka kotak ATM yang dilindungi Triton System. Kemudian dengan memasukkan flask disk berisi software Dillinger ke slot USB, maka akan memaksa ATM memuntahkan seluruh uang tunai di dalamnya. ATM yang dibobol Jack menggunakan perangkat Windows CE, sebuah versi sistem operasi buatan Microsoft Corp yang banyak digunakan pada komputer khusus termasuk ATM.


Jack mengatakan, para pembuat ATM sebenarnya telah membuat perangkat lunak yang bisa mencegah hacker mengulangi pola serangan yang sama, seperti yang ia lakukan di atas panggung saat itu. Namun Jack juga menegaskan bahwa ATM masih rentan dari serangan hacker. “Saya tidak cukup naif untuk menyatakan bahwa saya satu-satunya orang yang bisa melakukan hal ini,” katanya.

Jack menambahkan, ia yakin ATM yang digunakan oleh lembaga keuangan juga rentan diserang hacker. Namun ia belum bisa mensimulasikan serangan tersebut karena ia belum mampu mendapatkan ATM dari bank mana pun.

Sedangkan wakil direktur teknik Triton, Bob Douglas, mengatakan, dirinya tidak mengetahui adanya serangan yang sukses dilakukan terhadap perangkat yang dibuat perusahaannya.

Sekitar 6.000 hacker dan keamanan profesional minggu ini menghadiri konferensi Black Hat untuk membahas kerentanan dalam segala hal, mulai dari perangkat lunak yang menggunakan PC, ponsel, hingga sistem yang mengontrol jaringan listrik.

Banyak penyelenggara mempromosikan penelitian tersebut sebagai upaya untuk mempublikasikan kelemahan perangkat bagi pengguna, sehingga mereka dapat melindungi diri mereka dan mendorong para pembuat perangkat lunak, produsen dan pihak lain menemukan cara untuk membenahi kerentanan tersebut.

Sebuah ilmu pada dasarnya bagai pisau, bisa berfungsi ganda, untuk kebaikan atau keburukan tergantung pada sang tuan dimana ilmu tadi bersemayam, mau dimanfaatkan menjadi apa.

Nintendo 3DS, 'Rage' among Best of E3 nominees

(CNN) -- Nintendo's jump into 3-D gaming and "Rage," a game that combines racing with first-person shooting, topped the list of nominees in "The Best of E3 2010."

The list of Game Critics Award nominations, released Tuesday, features five mentions for "Rage" (id Software/Bethesda), a new game franchise, and 15 nominations for game publisher Electronic Arts.

The nominations are drawn from game and hardware presentations made at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, in Los Angeles, California, in early June. The judges represent 31 different gaming publications.

In the "Best of Show" category, one new gaming console garnered a nomination along with four game titles. The Nintendo 3DS, a hand-held console that displays 3-D images without the use of special glasses, beat out new motion-controllers from Microsoft (Kinect) and Sony (Move).

Neither of those controllers, designed to compete against Nintendo's Wii console, were nominated in the top category.

The four games in the top category cross all platforms.

-- "Dance Central" (Harmonix/MTV Games) is a dance video game exclusive to the Kinect/Xbox 360.

-- "Disney's Epic Mickey" (JunctionPoint/Disney Interactive Studios) will be available on the Wii and features the classic Disney icon in a cartoon land gone wrong.

-- "Portal 2" (Valve) drew cheers at E3 when it was announced. It returns players to the labs of Apature Science and the company of the soft-spoken, but homicidal computer, GLaDOS.

-- "Rage" rounds out the group that received "Best of Show" nods.

Both "Portal 2" and "Rage" will be released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. "Portal 2" will also be available for Mac.

Cara Mencari Arah Kiblat

Arah kiblat menjadi prasyarat menjalankan ibadah shalat. Di mana pun umat Islam menjalankan ritual keagamaan itu, mereka harus berkiblat ke Kabah di Mekkah. Penentuan arah kiblat tentu tak masalah bagi mereka yang berada di dekat Kabah. Bagaimana memastikannya jika berada jauh dari tempat suci itu?

Beberapa waktu lalu di internet muncul tulisan Usep Fathudin, mantan Staf Khusus Menteri Agama, yang mengungkap beragam arah kiblat masjid-masjid di Jakarta. Kesahihan kiblat suatu masjid, menurutnya, perlu dicapai sebelum masjid dibangun. Hal itu karena pergeseran 1 sentimeter saja bisa berarti 100 kilometer penyimpangan jaraknya.

Meskipun begitu, menurutnya, akurasi arah kiblat 100 persen memang tidak diwajibkan dalam shalat, seperti tersebut dalam Al Quran Surat Al Baqarah ayat 144, yang memerintahkan untuk shalat ke arah kiblat. ”Kata-kata ’ke arah’ ditafsirkan sebagai usaha maksimal mengarahkan shalat kita ke Kabah di Mekkah,” urainya.


Walaupun begitu, upaya untuk mendekati ketepatan arah ke kiblat dapat dilakukan dengan berbagai cara. Usep menyebutkan, penentuan arah kiblat Masjid Al Mukhlishun di Griya Depok Asri, Depok Tengah, yang berdiri tahun 2001, menggunakan suatu kompas kecil berbahasa Inggris, dengan tulisan Latin dan Arab.

Pada alat penunjuk arah itu tertulis bahwa untuk Jakarta dan sebagian besar kota di Indonesia, arah utara jarum kompas harus menunjuk angka 9 sebagai arah kiblat.

Kenyataannya, survei arah kiblat yang dilakukannya di berbagai masjid besar di Jakarta memperlihatkan, kompas yang digunakannya menunjuk arah yang berbeda-beda di tiap tempat ibadah itu, berkisar dari 7,5 hingga 9.

Penentuan arah kiblat yang dipakai umumnya mengacu pada arah utara geografis sebenarnya, yang memakai arah kompas atau jarum magnetik yang disebut ”pencari arah Kabah”. Arah jarum magnetik di kompas mengarah berdasarkan kutub magnetik Bumi di kutub utara.

Ternyata arah utara magnetik Bumi itu berbeda di tiap kota dari waktu ke waktu. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh rotasi Bumi. Penelitian menunjukkan arah utara magnetik terus bergeser sekitar 4,8 kilometer per tahun. Pada tahun 2005 pergeserannya mencapai 800 kilometer dari kutub utara sebenarnya. Pada 2050 diperkirakan utara magnetik Bumi mendekati Siberia.

Qibla Locator
Penggunaan kompas sebagai penunjuk arah kiblat belakangan memang dianggap kurang akurat. Belakangan diperkenalkan peranti lunak Qibla Locator yang termuat dalam situs web http://www.qiblalocator.com.

Qibla Locator atau penunjuk arah kiblat antara lain dirancang oleh Ibn Mas’ud dengan menggunakan peranti lunak aplikasi Google Maps API v2, sejak tahun 2006. Pengembangan tampilan dan aplikasinya kemudian melibatkan Hamed Zarrabi Zadeh dari Universitas Waterloo di Ontario, Kanada.


Pada Qibla Locator versi Beta seri 0.8.7 itu dilengkapi dengan geocoding dari Yahoo, pengontrol arah pada citra peta, dan indikator tingkat pembesaran. Hingga September 2007 dihasilkan empat versi Beta dengan beberapa aplikasi tambahan, Geocoder, dan tampilan jarak.

Dengan Qibla Locator yang berbasis Google Earth ini dapat diketahui arah kiblat dari mana pun kita berada. Untuk mengetahuinya, di bagian atas situs itu ada kotak untuk memasukkan lokasi, alamat atau nama jalan, kode pos, dan negara atau garis lintang dan garis bujur.

Maka di sisi kanan gambar peta akan muncul besaran arah kiblat atau kabah dan jaraknya dari posisi lokasi yang kita masukkan. Peranti lunak ini, menurut Thomas Djamaluddin, Kepala Pusat Pemanfaatan Sains Atmosfer dan Iklim Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (Lapan) sangat membantu guna mengecek arah kiblat secara akurat. ”Ini bisa untuk koreksi massal masjid-masjid di Indonesia,” katanya.

Bayangan matahari

Thomas, pakar astronomi dan astrofisika, mengemukakan bahwa ada penentuan arah kiblat yang menggunakan bayangan Matahari. Sekitar tanggal 26-30 Mei pukul 16.18 WIB dan 13-17 Juli pukul 16.27 WIB Matahari tepat berada di atas kota Mekkah.

Pada saat itu Matahari yang tampak dari semua penjuru Bumi dapat dijadikan penunjuk lokasi Kabah. Begitu pula bayangan benda tegak pada waktu itu juga dapat menjadi menentu arah ke kiblat.

Selain itu untuk daerah yang tidak mengalami siang, sama dengan Mekkah, waktu yang digunakan adalah saat Matahari di atas titik yang diametral dengan Mekkah. Waktu yang dapat dijadikan patokan penunjuk kiblat untuk wilayah tersebut adalah Matahari pada tanggal 12 hingga 16 Januari pukul 04.30 WIB dan 27 November hingga 1 Desember pukul 04.09 WIB.

Cara ini menurutnya paling mudah untuk mengoreksi arah kiblat, termasuk untuk garis saf di dalam masjid. Begitu mudah sehingga orang awam pun dapat melakukannya.

Rekor Baru Pesawat Tercepat di Dunia

Sebuah pesawat eksperimen berhasil memecahkan rekor penerbangan hipersonik Mach 6 atau enam kali kecepatan suara selama lebih dari tiga menit. Rekor sebelumnya hanya selama 12 detik.

Pesawat bernama X-51A Waverider ini awalnya dipasang pada sayap pesawat B-52 Stratofortress di selatan California pada Rabu pagi, 26 Mei 2010. X-51A kemudian dilepaskan, mesin jetnya kemudian berakselerasi sampai pada kecepatan Mach 6. Dia terbang selama 200 detik pada kecepatan itu sampai kemudian kehilangan akselerasi.

"Kami gembira telah berhasil melakukan uji coba X-51 A untuk misi hipersonik pertamanya," kata Charlie Brink, program manager X-51A Laboratorium Riset Angkatan Udara di Ohio, Amerika Serikat.

"Kami menyamakan lompatan teknologi mesin ini setara dengan lompatan setelah Perang Dunia II dari pesawat bermesin propeller ke jet," kata Brink.

Waverider ini dibangun oleh Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne dan Boeing Co. Joe Vogel, Direktur Hipersonik Boeing mengatakan, "Ini rekor dunia baru dan memberikan fondasi bagi sejumlah aplikasi hipersonik, termasuk akses ke angkasa, pengintaian, jangkauan global dan transportasi komersial."

Saat ini ada empat pesawat X-51A yang telah dikembangkan. Tiga lainnya akan diujicobakan pada musim gugur ini. "Tak ada uji coba yang sempurna," kata Brink. "Dan saya yakin, kami akan menemui anomali yang harus ditangani sebelum penerbangan berikutnya."
