With the upcoming Assembly polls in mind, the ruling SAD-BJP combine today renewed the demand for transfer of Chandigarh and Punjabi speaking areas to Punjab, along with the demand for protection of Punjab’s share of river waters.
More than four years into their term, the ruling combine had not been as vociferous on the said issues as it was today, when less than a year is left for Punjab to go to the polls.
Sounding a warning for the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, the SAD-BJP government in Punjab raised the issues today in the form of “resolutions by the congregation” at the party’s political conference at Talwandi Sabo on the occasion of Baisakhi.
The combine passed six resolutions, which also included a resolution on carrying out Kar Sewa of gurdwaras demolished during 1984 anti-Sikh riots. It blamed Congress and Sarna brothers of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for “cruel negligence” and “gross sin” by not allowing justice to the gurdwaras for 26 years. The resolution demanded DSGMC and its office bearers wake up from their “deep slumber” to maintain maryada of gurdwaras and begin their Kar Sewa.
