Bad parenting linked to drinking

The style of parenting is one of the strongest influences on how much alcohol a child will drink as a teenager and young adult, a new study has found. Think tank Demos found out that bad parenting made children eight times more likely to become binge drinkers at 16 years, and twice as likely to drink excessively when they were 34.

Researchers analysed data from more than 15,000 children born in Britain over the last 40 years as part of the study, The Independent reported.

They found the "tough love" style of parenting, which combined warmth and discipline, was the most effective in ensuring against children developing an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

Women more likely to stray in relationships

Men may have been known for straying in relationships but the reality is women are more likely to get caught up in a love triangle, says a study.

Almost a quarter of women asked during the study were found to have been romantically involved with more than one individual at a time, while just 15 percent of the men admitted to two-timing, Daily Express reported.

Of those love triangles about 18 percent started on Facebook or Twitter.

In the survey of 2,000 people, it showed half of them believe one can be in love with more than one person at a time.

It was also learned that high earners are more likely to stray than those on lower wages.
According to Jo Hemmings, a relationship psychologist, while male love rats may be the biggest cheaters, driven by lust, opportunity and a misguided sense of entitlement, it is women, who tend to have a more complex view of relationships.

Study finds sniffer dogs can smell out lung cancer

German scientists experimenting with sniffer dogs have found they can accurately detect lung cancer by smelling breath samples.

In a study carried out by researchers from Schillerhoehe Hospital in Germany, the dogs were able to correctly detect lung tumours in 71 per cent of patients, suggesting a similar technique could be used for early detection in future.

"In the breath of patients with lung cancer, there are likely to be different chemicals to normal breath samples and the dogs' keen sense of smell can detect this difference at an early stage of the disease," said Thorsten Walles, who led the study and published its findings in the European Respiratory Journal on Thursday.

Lung cancer, mostly linked to smoking, is the second most common form of cancer in men and women across Europe and causes more than 340,000 deaths per year. It is also the most common cause of death from cancer worldwide.

The disease is notoriously hard to detect in its early stages and scientists have been working on using breath tests for possible future screening programmes. The sniffing method relies on identifying so-called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are linked to the presence of cancer.

The researchers explained that although many different possible breath test techniques have been tried, they are very difficult develop for use in practice in clinics because patients are not allowed to smoke or eat before the test, sample analysis can take a long time and there is also a high risk of interference. Because of these reasons, no lung cancer-specific VOCs have yet been identified.

In this study the researchers worked specially-trained dogs and with 220 volunteers, including some lung cancer patients, some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and some with no lung health problems.

The results show the dogs successfully identified 71 samples with lung cancer out of a possible 100, and correctly detected 372 samples that did not have lung cancer out of a possible 400.

The animals were also able to detect lung cancer independently from COPD and tobacco smoke.
Walles said their results confirm that there is a reliable and stable "marker" for lung cancer in the breath, but there is still a lot of work to do to find out exactly what that is.

"This is a big step forward...but we still need to precisely identify the compounds observed in the exhaled breath of patients. It is unfortunate that dogs cannot communicate the biochemistry of the scent of cancer."

Watching TV for long hours shortens life expectancy

People sitting in front of TV for hours on end could shorten their life
expectancy by almost five years, says an Australian study published Tuesday by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Researchers from the University of Queensland have estimated that for every hour adults spend in front of TV, their life expectancy shortens by almost 22 minutes. Those who watched six hours a day lived 4.8 years less than those who don't watch TV.

The study is first of its kind in Australia looking into TV habits' effect on longevity. The researchers found that watching TV could have a similar negative impact on life expectancy to that of obesity, smoking and low physical activity.

"People don't realise how it all adds up," the study's lead author Lennert Veerman told the Australian Associated Press (AAP)." They should try not to watch too much TV and find alternative things to do, preferably things that are light activities," Veerman said.

The study was based on data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study. It asked over 11,000 people aged over 25 about their weekly TV viewing time. The study found that in 2008, Australian adults watched 9.8 billion hours of TV.

Women gossip for one-third of waking life

While it may be a Herculean task for anyone to calculate how much his wife or girl friend talks in a
day, a study has found an average woman spends five hours a day gossiping.Whether they are at home or at work, females natter for around 298 minutes daily, which is the equivalent of more than a third of their waking hours, researchers in Britain have found.

Discussing other people's problems, who's dating who and other people's children form the basis of most chats. Other topics most regularly include sex, shopping and soaps, Daily Express reported the study as stating.

The study found women spend 24 minutes a day discussing their weight, diets and dress size. One third said they spend a part of their day discussing what they are eating for lunch, while a quarter regularly exchange recipes.

The survey was commissioned to mark wine firm FirstCape Cafe Collection's search to find Britain's Queen of Chat.

Spokesman Steve Barton said: "Women are renowned for their ability to chat and men are fascinated by what they find to talk about when they get together.

"I'm pleased to see complaining about their partners was at the bottom of their list, though. It is also interesting to see how the conversation differs between women talking to each other and women talking to their partners."

6-8 HOURS OF SLEEP HELPS CUT FLAB

Wondering how to lose weight without much effort? Don`t stress and get some good sleep. A new Kaiser Permanente study has found that people with the lowest stress levels and who also got more than six hours, but not more than eight hours, of sleep were most likely to lose at least 10 pounds.

Nearly 500 participants from Kaiser Permanente in Oregon and Washington took part in the study, which measured whether sleep, stress, depression, television viewing, and computer screen time were correlated with weight loss. Several previous studies have found an association between these factors and obesity, but few have looked at whether these factors predict weight loss.

"This study suggests that when people are trying to lose weight, they should try to get the right amount of sleep and reduce their stress," said lead author Charles Elder. "Some people may just need to cut back on their schedules and get to bed earlier. Others may find that exercise can reduce stress and help them sleep. For some people, mind/body techniques such as meditation also might be helpful," he added. The researchers, however, cautioned that their findings might not apply to all groups trying to lose weight. The study has been published in the International Journal of Obesity.

BE WELL MANNERED FIRST TO BE HEALTHY!

A new research has found that people with good manners at work and at home are more than twice as likely to be in good health.

It found that those people tend to have more hygiene routines in place and take better care of their health and well-being. As a result, they suffer less from colds and cases of diarrhoea and are two-and-a-half times more likely to be in good health than those with poor manners.

The study, conducted by Dettol and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also found older people look after their health more than young people and also have better manners. Homemakers have the highest levels of personal and household hygiene, while office workers and students have the worst. Women also tend to be more hygienic than men. Everyone can change their behaviour and help to break the chain of infection.

Good manners are also at the heart of itbeing aware and thinking how our behaviour affects us and those around us," the Daily Express quoted John Oxford, chairman of the Hygiene Council and professor of virology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, as saying.  "We're not powerless against infectious disease – everyone can contribute through simple hygiene measures such as washing our hands," he added.

Mau Tau, Tapi Malu

Masalahnya, persoalan pendidikan seksual bukan Cuma menyangkut persoalan anatomi tubuh doang.

Pernah dengar kamus Oxford??

HARRY POTTER
Masing –masing college memiliki keunikan sendiri.
